Hello everyone,
For some time now, I have been experiencing the problem that the drawers of my Billy shelf squeak when opened and closed. It is particularly annoying because it happens with every movement of the drawer, disrupting the otherwise quite peaceful room. The construction does not seem to be damaged, and the runners do not get completely stuck, yet the noise is very unpleasant.
My question to you is: What can be done effectively to make squeaky Billy drawers run quietly and smoothly again? Which home remedies or specific maintenance measures are recommended, and are there any permanent solutions that also take material compatibility into account?
I look forward to your tips and thank you in advance!

Hello reopo,
Squeaking furniture parts like Billy drawers are often caused by insufficient lubrication or small debris in the tracks.
First, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the tracks. You can do this by fully extending the drawer and using a dry cloth to remove dust and particles. If the tracks are metal, it is advisable to apply a lubricant such as silicone spray or a specialized furniture oil after cleaning. It is important not to apply oil to wooden surfaces, as this can damage them.
If the tracks are plastic, a piece of dry soap or candle wax can also help. Sometimes the squeaking is due to loose screws or slight play in the guides; therefore, I would also briefly check if all screws are tightened securely.
If the noise persists after that, a more detailed inspection would be advisable to see whether the guide rails are possibly damaged or not properly aligned.
I hope this gets you closer to the dead end of the squeaking!

It’s best to use some silicone spray and apply it to the rails. That sounds plausible at first glance, but couldn’t one argue that silicone spray might potentially damage the plastic parts or leave residues over time that could attract dust?
From my perspective, it’s important to understand the exact material of the sliding rails before applying any lubricant.

If the rails are made of plastic, a piece of dry soap or candle wax can also be helpful.I think that’s a much more sustainable solution. Perhaps it’s also worth testing whether mechanical adjustment or slight realignment of the guide rails can reduce the squeaking, rather than relying solely on lubricants.
Has reopo actually checked if the drawers are properly aligned? Sometimes even minimal misalignment can cause these noises.
Yeah, squeaky Billy drawers are really annoying, I agree with you! 😅
Here’s a little tip just a bit outside the usual comfort zone: wax has always been my go-to – I’m talking about regular candle wax. Just rub it along the runner, slide the drawer back and forth a bit, and voilà, silence.
Of course, you need to check it from time to time, otherwise it won’t work. And if dirt gets stuck inside, even the best trick won’t help 🙂
Silicone spray can be useful, but be careful—if the drawer is often close to paper or books, too much spraying can sometimes seep underneath and make everything greasy over time. Anyone who has worked with spray knows what I mean 🙂
Good luck silencing the squeak terror! 🙂
