Hello everyone,

I am planning to customize the color of some furniture pieces from the Ikea Hemnes series, as I find the standard options a bit too plain and would like to add a personal touch. I am particularly interested in different coloring methods – from traditional paint finishes and stains to more creative techniques like decoupage or applying adhesive films. I want to know which approaches work best for Hemnes furniture without compromising functionality or durability.

Additionally, it would be helpful if anyone has experience with surface preparation, especially considering the continuous MDF substrate of these pieces. Which materials are suitable for which applications, which types of paint are compatible, and are there any special considerations for shelves or dressers?

In short: How can I customize Ikea Hemnes furniture with paint or finish to achieve a durable result that looks good?

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Interesting question. I would first like to understand why specifically Hemnes? Many IKEA furniture pieces have different finishes that can be easier or more difficult to work with. Hemnes is usually made of solid wood or at least veneer, which certainly offers some advantages.

How reliable are these methods in terms of durability? Especially with vinyl wrapping, durability might be an issue, right? I question this because often the focus is only on appearance, without considering practical usability.

Hemnes has a painted surface that needs to be sanded if you want to change the color. After that, acrylic or chalk paint works well. I would seal it with a matte clear varnish, which protects and preserves the surface.

For customizing the color of Hemnes furniture, the following procedure is recommended:

- Lightly sand the surface to remove or roughen the existing paint layer.
- Remove dust and apply a primer to ensure good adhesion of the new paint.
- Use water-based or solvent-based acrylic or chalk paints, depending on the desired finish.
- After drying, seal with a clear protective varnish, preferably matte or satin.

Please note: Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid pine wood with a lacquer coating. The traces of the original surface significantly affect the final result and the durability of the new finish.

Here is a brief guide for preparation:

1. Remove handles and any loose components.
2. Lightly sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper to roughen up the old paint.
3. Wipe off the dust with a damp cloth and allow to dry for at least 24 hours.
4. Apply a good quality acrylic primer (e.g., suitable for wood).
5. After the primer has fully dried, apply the desired paint.
6. To protect the surface, seal it with a matte clear coat once the paint is dry.

Common mistakes include sanding too aggressively or insufficient preparation, which can cause the new paint to not adhere properly.

I believe a touch of color makes life more vibrant – even with Hemnes. 😄 A little tip from my experience: chalk paint creates a lovely vintage look and is quite forgiving if your brushwork isn’t perfect.

For me, it worked really well to lightly sand the layers in between with fine sandpaper. This creates a very smooth surface and makes the finish last for a long time.
