Hello everyone,

I have noticed that assembly errors often occur with Malm chests of drawers from Ikea, or at least many users seem to have difficulties with them. My question is: Why are assembly errors so common with Malm chests, even though the instructions are supposed to be quite detailed?

I am particularly interested in whether design compromises, poor material quality, unclear instructions, or possibly unsuitable tools are causing these problems. Are there specific steps during assembly that are especially prone to errors or often misunderstood?

I look forward to a detailed discussion with shared experiences and any tips on how to avoid mistakes. Thanks in advance!

Most of the time, it’s because parts are mixed up or oriented incorrectly. Often, the screws are not immediately obvious in the manual either. The best tools to use are an Allen key or a cordless drill set to low torque.

Regarding assembly errors with Malm dressers, the following can be said:

Ikea uses easy-to-assemble but very thin particle boards for the Malm series, which slightly reduces stability and requires precise work during assembly.

Parts are confused or installed upside down.
This is correct; many parts have similar shapes, and without careful checking of the markings, errors are easy to make. The assembly instructions minimize text and rely mainly on illustrations, which may not be intuitive for all users.

Additionally, the included tool is minimal. An extra Phillips head screwdriver can be helpful, especially for tightening stuck wood connectors.

Typically problematic areas are the cabinet at the joints with the side panels and the drawer slides, which can stick or be misaligned if not positioned correctly.

Hello,

I can relate well to the questions, as I have also assembled several Malm dressers. The common mistakes I’ve noticed often come down to impatience during assembly rather than issues with the design itself.

Exactly, the material is fundamentally not solid wood and is manufactured with very little tolerance.

What helps me:
- Sort all parts completely before starting assembly.
- Study the instructions carefully, not just skim through them.
- At each step, check that you have the correct side, for example for the back panel or connection points.

Also, tightening the screws should be done evenly. Skipping this step or over- or under-tightening can make the dresser unstable or warped.

Has anyone else experienced the instructions being confusing or even incorrect in certain parts? It would be interesting to hear.

For better understanding, I will explain common sources of errors when assembling a Malm dresser:

1. Part confusion: The parts often look very similar, especially the side panels and back panels. A common mistake is, for example, orienting the back panel incorrectly so that the screws don’t fit.

2. Alignment and sequence: The instructions require a specific order. For instance, loosely assembling all parts first and only tightening them at the end helps prevent warping. Ignoring this usually results in everything being misaligned.

3. Tools & screws: The included Ikea tool is practical but often uncomfortable to handle. A small cordless drill with torque control can help avoid problems when tightening screws.

4. Drawer runners: These must be installed precisely. Even small deviations can cause drawers to stick or not close properly.

5. Material: As mentioned before, particleboard can crack, chip, or warp. So it’s important to work carefully and avoid forcing parts or applying too much pressure.

My tip: Check all parts before assembly, do not overtighten L-brackets, and follow the instructions step by step with full concentration.

Taking these points into account significantly reduces assembly errors.

I can only agree with that. Many give up halfway here because it’s tedious to position the small plastic parts accurately. Taking your time and possibly using a small ruler afterwards will save you a lot of trouble.

I would also include the installation of the back panel here. This is often fixed too early, before the rest is properly aligned – then it doesn’t fit cleanly anymore. Patience is very important in this step.

And one more tip for everyone: Don’t get discouraged, the chest of drawers is sturdy when assembled correctly. 🙂
