Hello community,

A few weeks ago, I purchased an IKEA Malm bed and a matching chest of drawers. Both pieces have a surface described as "sensitive." I assume it is a melamine coating or a lacquered foil. Now, I want to clean my furniture gently but effectively, without risking damage or dull spots.

My question is: How do I properly clean MALM furniture with a sensitive surface? Are there specific cleaning products or home remedies that work well, or ones I should definitely avoid? How should I handle stubborn stains, such as from coffee cups or grease?

I look forward to your tips and advice, especially on what to consider during cleaning to protect the surface in the long term.

Thank you in advance!

For MALM furniture with a sensitive surface, I recommend using a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents and abrasives, as they can damage the surface. For stains, usually some diluted dish soap in water is sufficient.

Hello,

to answer your question properly, I would first like to address the material properties. The MALM series often uses a melamine resin coating or a lacquered foil, both of which are sensitive to mechanical stress and inappropriate cleaning agents.

I recommend starting with cleaning using a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. It is important not to use cloths that are too wet, as moisture can penetrate the joints and cause swelling.

For everyday dirt, mild soap solutions are ideal. Please avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or alcohol, as these can dull or damage the surface.

For stains such as coffee or grease, I would suggest a mixture of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, preferably tested first in an inconspicuous area. The stain should be removed as quickly as possible, since prolonged exposure makes cleaning more difficult. Also, avoid scrubbing too hard to prevent scratches.

If you want to know more about care: avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and moisture, as this prevents deformation and discoloration.

By the way, I’m curious whether you use the furniture daily and if there are children or pets in the household, as this might affect the required cleaning frequency and level of care.

Hello,

I would like to suggest a structured approach that can help you maintain and clean sensitive MALM surfaces over the long term:

1. Preparation: Gently remove loose dust and dirt with a dry, soft microfiber cloth.

2. Cleaning solution: Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of mild, pH-neutral dish soap. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based cleaners at all costs.

3. Application: Dip the microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out well so that it is only slightly damp.

4. Surface cleaning: Wipe the furniture with gentle motions, avoiding vigorous scrubbing.

5. Drying: Immediately wipe off moisture with a dry, soft cloth to prevent water marks.

6. Stain treatment: For stubborn stains, use a special plastic or furniture cleaner without solvents, suitable for foil or melamine surfaces. Test this first in an inconspicuous area.

Common mistakes I often see are using scouring pads or harsh spray cleaners, which leave dull spots.

Summary: Gentle cleaning, no harsh or abrasive products, always careful and using only a small amount of water.

If you are ever unsure, the IKEA care instructions on the website or in the user manual can often help you choose the right products.

Good to know, thanks! I thought a slightly abrasive cloth might help remove stains without applying too much force.

To clarify: The furniture is in my bedroom, there are no pets or children in the household. So it’s used quite carefully, but I have already noticed some coffee and drink stains.

What about cleaning small scratches? Is there anything that can be done, or is the surface not repairable in those cases?

Thanks very much for the explanations so far!
