O
onla59I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA at home that I use regularly. Unfortunately, some stubborn stains have appeared on the white surfaces, which cannot be removed with normal wiping. My question is: How can I properly clean BILLY shelves when dealing with stubborn stains without damaging the material or the finish? Are there any specific cleaning products or methods that are particularly effective yet gentle on the surface? I would greatly appreciate practical tips, especially for older or more heavily used shelves.

How can I properly clean BILLY shelves when dealing with stubborn stains without damaging the material or finish?First, it is important to know exactly what material the BILLY shelves are made of. They are usually particleboard with a melamine coating. Chemical cleaners can often damage the surface. Have you tried using a mild soap solution? Why were other methods ruled out?
For additional information: For stubborn stains on melamine resin surfaces, I recommend first cleaning with a soft cloth, warm water, and a mild dish soap. Afterwards, you can carefully try isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to remove tougher dirt. It is important to work with circular motions and minimal pressure to avoid wear.
Sandpaper or abrasive cleaners are not allowed, as these will permanently damage the surface.

Additionally, I would like to point out that strong solvents such as acetone or turpentine are not suitable for cleaning BILLY shelves. These can damage and cause the surface to swell. Due to the thinness of the melamine layer, the surface is delicate.
A proven tip is to use erasers (plastic erasers), which can gently remove stains mechanically. Pencil marks or dirt stains, in particular, can be treated successfully this way.
Please test on an inconspicuous spot before applying.

Why were other methods excluded?I mainly avoided harsh cleaners due to concerns about damaging the surface. I tried soapy water several times, but it wasn’t effective on certain stains, such as red wine or marker stains.
