ᐅ How do I mount BILLY shelves on drywall (gypsum board)?

Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to mount several Billy shelves on a wall made of drywall panels. My specific question is: How can I securely fasten the shelves to drywall so that they won’t come loose even under heavier loads?

I already have some drywall anchors in mind, but I’m unsure which type of fastener is really suitable—especially when the shelves are loaded. Also, should I definitely try to locate the wall stud behind the drywall, or are appropriate anchors sufficient even if I only hit the drywall?

I would appreciate any advice on types of anchors, fastening techniques, or experiences with BILLY shelves on these kinds of walls.

Best regards!

Tilt anchors are mandatory for shelves like these
Exactly.

Additionally: Make sure to drill the holes perfectly horizontal, not at an angle. Also, you should screw the anchors in by hand first before inserting the screws.

The screw length is also important: It should be at least long enough to provide sufficient grip for both the screw and anchor in the wall, usually around 60-80 mm (2.4-3.1 inches).

Could you also mention how thick your drywall panels are? The standard board is usually 12.5 mm (0.5 inches).

They are actually 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) thick, just as you guessed. Thanks for the tip about drilling horizontally! I’m considering screwing a wooden batten horizontally onto the wall and then attaching the shelves to it to distribute the load more evenly. Does anyone have experience with this or any recommendations?

A wooden batten as a substructure is a very good idea. Attach the batten to the drywall using toggle anchors, then you can mount the shelves on the batten. This way, the load is better distributed and the wall experiences less stress.

I also find that practical because it gives you additional flexibility when aligning the shelves. However, it’s important that the wooden batten itself is securely fixed. Use stronger wall anchors or, if possible, screw directly into the studs.

I once tried hanging shelves directly on drywall without reinforcement – that failed after a few months. Since I started using battens, it’s been much more stable 🙂

The wooden battens are good, but don’t forget that the battens need to be securely fixed at 3-4 points with strong anchors. Otherwise, it won’t be effective.

In addition to toggle bolts, there are also special heavy-duty anchors for hollow walls that can support more weight. This could be an alternative to the wooden battens if you do not want an additional visible wooden strip.
