Hello everyone,

I have Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets at home and would like to retrofit the existing doors with a soft-close system to prevent slamming and make using them more comfortable. My specific question is: What is the easiest and least complicated way to add soft-close functionality to Ikea Metod doors?

I know Ikea offers hinges with soft-close, but I don’t want to replace all the hinges entirely, as that would be quite time-consuming. Are there affordable soft-close adapters or dampers that are compatible and easy to install afterward? Or are there any tips when attaching them that I should be aware of?

If anyone has practical experience with this or good recommendations, I would really appreciate it! Tips on proper installation, potential issues during retrofitting, or suggestions for necessary tools are also welcome.

The easiest solution is surface-mounted dampers that you can attach to the inside of the cabinet door without removing the door. Ikea offers their own dampers, which fit perfectly.

Alternatively, there are inexpensive retrofit kits available—just screw them in and you’re done. The only tools you typically need are a screwdriver and a drill.

For retrofitting soft-close functionality on Ikea Metod doors, the following should be noted:

- The standard Metod hinges often already include a soft-close feature or can be replaced with the soft-close version. This is the most durable and reliable method.
- For customers who want to avoid this effort, external dampers are an option. These are attached either inside the cabinet or directly on the door and work through friction damping.
- When selecting dampers, it is important to consider the door size and weight to choose the appropriate damping strength.
- Dampers that are too weak often result in insufficient soft-close effect, while those that are too strong may prevent the door from closing completely.

Besides a screwdriver and possibly a cordless drill, no additional tools are needed, but precise positioning of the dampers is crucial for a good result.

I understand that the main priority here is easy installation. At first, I was unsure whether these dampers would really provide enough comfort.

However, it has definitely been worth it for me to take the step. It’s great when you no longer have to push the door closed but it gently closes almost on its own. Even though installing them with small screws was a bit tedious, the result made it absolutely worthwhile.

I can confirm that. My advice is to use fewer mounting points, test carefully, and adjust accordingly. Also, be patient. I found it helpful to install the dampers initially in a removable way in case you want to reposition them later.
