Hello everyone, I have a question and hope to get some helpful answers here. I am planning to upgrade an older Ikea kitchen to the new Metod system, but I am not clear on which fittings from the Metod system are compatible with older kitchen models.

More specifically, I am interested in whether Metod hinges, such as the standard hinges or other special fittings, can be installed on older frames or cabinet variants without major adjustments to the fronts or cabinets.

I would appreciate any experiences or tips on which Metod fittings work best and what to watch out for during the upgrade to ensure everything remains stable and functional. Thank you!

There are some uncertainties that need to be clarified beforehand. For example: What exactly do you mean by older kitchen models? IKEA has had different system designs over the past decades, and not every Metod fitting will fit them easily.

Generally, Metod hinges are designed for modern frames and carcasses with specific drilling distances, which can cause problems if the older cabinets have different dimensions.

So before buying Metod fittings blindly, you should carefully compare the drill holes and measurements, otherwise installation can become very tricky.

Do you already have specific measurements or model names of your old cabinets?

Good point about the dimensions, thanks for the note! So, my kitchen is about 15 years old, back when the Faktum system was still used, which I believe has since been replaced by Metod.

The cabinet carcasses use the classic 37mm (1.46 inches) grid system, but the actual hinge drilling patterns are somewhat different from today’s.

Besides the hinges, I’m also interested in the clamping and mounting systems for cover panels and shelves – so more than just hinges, but the full range of fittings that are compatible with Metod or at least adaptable.

Maybe someone with hands-on experience can advise where it’s best to start with the conversion?

This is a very valid question. Metod is indeed the successor to Faktum and has brought some changes, especially regarding hinge dimensions and doweling.

To answer directly: The standard Metod hinges (e.g., the 110° opening angle hinges with standard Ø35 mm (1.38 inch) drill holes) only partially fit Faktum cabinets because the drill holes are placed in different positions.

For a relatively simple conversion, it is recommended either to:
- continue using the Faktum hinge mounts from Ikea and only replace the hinges
- or alternatively, create suitable adapter plates or custom drillings if you have the necessary DIY skills

As for the other fittings, many Metod fittings are not compatible 1:1, as the carcass constructions differ.

I always find it surprising that IKEA updates its systems but fails to properly maintain compatibility. Obviously, they want to generate new sales with new fittings, but for customers who only want to upgrade parts, it can be quite frustrating.

In this case, anyone working with a vintage Faktum cabinet almost has to rely on third-party suppliers or customize parts themselves. The Metod fittings simply are not designed for that.

This might be a bit provocative, but if you really want to modernize, a complete cabinet replacement might be more practical than dealing with incompatible hinges.

That’s certainly a point, but I wouldn’t see it as a complete drawback. You just need to carefully analyze which fittings are essential and where compromises can be made.

Suitable adapter plates could, for example, serve as the link. Is there anyone here in the forum who has successfully used such adapters?
