Hello everyone,

I am planning to position some Ikea Besta furniture in my apartment flexibly and am currently looking for suitable caster wheels. My main concerns are the following:

- Which caster wheels are technically suitable to make the relatively heavy BESTA system both secure and easy to move?
- Which caster wheels offer the best combination of stability and mobility, especially on different floor types such as laminate, carpet, and tiles?
- What about the load capacity of the caster wheels when one or more units are connected?
- Are there any special recommendations within the Ikea community or from users for caster wheels that are particularly durable?

I am interested in which models or types of caster wheels you consider best suited to optimize the flexibility of the Ikea BESTA furniture without compromising safety or ease of use.

Using casters with Ikea Besta furniture requires careful selection based on the following factors:

1. Caster material:
- Polyurethane casters are usually the best choice, as they leave minimal marks on both hard and delicate floors and offer good rolling performance.
- Rubber casters provide better grip on soft or uneven surfaces but are less suitable for laminate floors, as they may damage the surface.

2. Load capacity:
- Besta cabinets can be relatively heavy depending on the load. I recommend using casters with a load capacity of at least 20 kg (44 lbs) per caster as a precaution. For example, with four casters, each supporting 20 kg (44 lbs), the cabinet can carry up to 80 kg (176 lbs).

3. Diameter and construction:
- Casters with a larger diameter (50–65 mm (2–2.5 inches)) roll more easily over door thresholds or uneven surfaces.
- Flat mounting plates or suitable threaded fittings are important to securely attach the casters.

4. Locking function:
- A locking brake is important if the furniture should remain stationary without unwanted rolling.

5. Special applications:

Sure, I use the BESTA in the living room on laminate flooring. The cabinets are usually about 60 x 40 cm (24 x 16 inches), typically connected 2-3 side by side, resulting in a total weight of around 50-60 kg (110-132 lbs) – so relatively moderate.

That’s a good point and I have thought about it too. However, I prefer having casters directly on the furniture pieces, so I can move or rearrange the modules individually without needing extra equipment.

I understand this flexibility, but allow me two critical remarks:

- Individual pieces of furniture on casters can be unstable. Especially when building multiple modular units, there is a risk that a single caster is less load-bearing than the overall construction.
- Additionally, you cannot prevent the casters from moving in different directions on uneven floors or during shifting. Combining them with fixed feet or at least a defined stop point would increase stability.

Have you considered adding a connector between your BESTA modules that locks the caster at a central protrusion while keeping the modules flexible?
