HAUGIANLUC1 Jan 2021 10:23Hello everyone, I own several Ikea Besta cabinets and would like to retrofit a soft-close mechanism on the doors. My specific question is: Is it possible to add a soft-close system to Ikea Besta doors without completely replacing the doors or the hinges? If so, which systems are suitable, and what is the best way to install them to ensure the soft-close function works optimally and is durable? I have done some research, but as far as I know, Ikea does not offer their own soft-close hinges as an aftermarket solution. Thanks for your experiences and tips!

Can I retrofit Ikea Besta doors with a soft-close system without completely replacing the doors or the hinges? Basically, it is possible, but it depends heavily on the existing hinge and door construction. Ikea Besta standard hinges usually do not have soft-close, and these cup hinges are often firmly mounted on the cabinet side. If you only want to upgrade the door, you should first check if your hinges have space for a retrofit damper—that means whether a soft-close insert can be installed there.
If not, there are two ways to solve this:
- The most common solution is indeed replacing the hinges with soft-close hinges, for example from Ikea itself or compatible brands that match the exact drilling holes and dimensions of the original hinges.
- Alternatively, there are so-called soft-close clip-on dampers or double-sided soft-close elements that can be attached to the inside of the door or inside the cabinet. These are not always as elegant but usually work with a bit of craftsmanship.
Correct positioning is crucial because improper installation can cause malfunction or increased wear. One additional tip: make sure your doors are not too heavy, as the dampers may fail faster in that case. Installation is usually done with screws or adhesive plates, depending on the system.
Feel free to provide your exact measurements and hinge types here, so I can give more tailored advice on suitable solutions.

I have done some research, but to my knowledge Ikea itself does not offer its own soft-close hinges as a retrofit solution. That is correct; Ikea generally sells soft-close hinges only as complete hinges. Retrofit kits are usually available from third-party providers or at hardware stores.

With Ikea Besta, the standard hinges usually do not have soft-close. That is correct. The Besta cabinet frame typically comes with traditional clip hinges that do not include damping. If you want to add soft-close functionality, the best approach is to completely replace the hinges with compatible soft-close models that fit into the same drill holes mechanically.

The easiest way is to replace the existing hinges with soft-close hinges. I agree with that. Additionally, soft-close hinges provide better cushioning and tend to be more durable than added-on dampers. Alternatively, there are true retrofit kits that attach inside the cabinet frame, but they require more space and are less discreet.
If someone already has an open door, it is important to consider both door and cabinet dimensions, as incorrect installation can cause the doors not to close flush or be misaligned.
My recommendation: When in doubt, it’s better to choose original-compatible soft-close hinge solutions; these are available in Ikea stores or specialized furniture hardware suppliers.
