I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen with the corresponding countertops and would like to clean the surface in a way that keeps its appearance fresh and intact for as long as possible. Since the Metod countertops are subjected to quite a bit of wear in everyday use, I’m particularly interested in which cleaning products and methods are recommended to avoid scratches, discoloration, or a dull surface.
I’m especially curious about:
- Are there any household remedies or cleaning products that should definitely be avoided?
- What is the best approach when stains occur (e.g., from food or oils)?
- Does anyone use special care products or sealants that enhance protection?
I look forward to your well-founded tips and experiences so I can keep my Metod countertops in top condition for the long term. Thanks in advance!

Hi Songustave,
I can understand you well; I was also unsure at first how to properly care for Metod countertops without damaging them. I noticed that aggressive scouring agents and harsh cleaners really don’t help—in fact, they do the opposite: the surface becomes dull and rough.
What works for me is simply warm water with a mild dishwashing detergent, applied with a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, I use a non-scratch sponge—that usually works well. For grease stains, I quickly remove them with some dish soap to prevent them from soaking in.
I know this sounds simple, but it has helped me keep the look for a long time without the countertop becoming dull or showing small scratches.

Hello,
In general, I recommend the following care instructions for IKEA Metod countertops:
- Use only mild cleaning agents such as neutral soap or pH-neutral all-purpose cleaners.
- Avoid products containing alcohol or bleach, as these can damage the protective surface layer.
- To remove dried-on stains, a damp microfiber cloth with a small amount of dish soap is advisable.
- After cleaning, the countertop should be wiped dry with a clean cloth to prevent water spots.
For additional protection, specially formulated wax-based impregnations can be used, but they must be suitable for the type of countertop and should be tested first on an inconspicuous area.

Good morning,
I would like to share my knowledge in a structured way because the care of IKEA Metod countertops is often handled incorrectly, which affects their appearance.
1. General cleaning:
- Daily cleaning is best done with a damp, soft cloth and mild dish soap.
- Vigorous scrubbing or harsh cleaners can damage the sealant.
2. Stain removal:
- Treat fresh stains immediately with warm water and dish soap.
- Gently remove dried residues using a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap.
- Do not use sharp scratching tools.
3. Maintenance and protection:
- Special products for laminated countertops can help refresh the protective film.
- Waxes or oils are not suitable, as they do not penetrate the surface and may cause uneven spots.
4. Prevention:
- Always avoid placing hot pots and cutting directly on the countertop to prevent mechanical damage.
Common mistakes I have observed include the use of scouring agents or bleach. These attack the plastic core and surface layer, leading to unsightly discoloration over time.
I hope these tips help you!

Hey everyone!!!
I’m really impressed by how much you can achieve with proper care! 🙂 After 2 years, my Metod countertop still looks like new, and I haven’t used any special products.
Here’s what I do:
- I wipe it daily with water and a drop of very mild dish soap.
- For really tough stains, I use a little vinegar water (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) – it works great and keeps the surface fresh!
Of course, don’t do this too often, and always wipe it again immediately with clean water!!
My advice: patience and gentle cleaning are key! Don’t give up if it gets sticky or greasy :-) Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone,
"Properly cleaning IKEA Metod countertops" might sound dry at first, but it’s actually a topic where a little extra care really makes a difference!
I think the countertops repay you with a nice, even surface when you avoid treating them with the wrong products.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners, as these will only damage the surface.
- Minimal effort, maximum effect: a damp cloth, mild soap, and maybe an occasional specialized laminate cleaner—nothing professional, but definitely useful.
- Sealing in the traditional sense? Not really! The countertops already have a protective layer and shouldn’t be overloaded with wax or oil.
For those who enjoy styling and maintenance, you can even create a small routine—a mini spa day for your kitchen! 😄
