MARCMARHello everyone, I am currently considering whether there are practical options to retrofit IKEA Billy shelves with LED lights. I am especially interested in whether there are suitable add-on or built-in modules that can be easily installed without affecting the appearance of the shelves or requiring extensive modifications. It is also important to know if such solutions are truly reliable, meaning if the LEDs provide sufficient illumination and how the power supply can be best managed – with batteries or mains electricity. Has anyone had experience with this or can recommend specific products? Thanks in advance for your help!

if there are practical options to retrofit IKEA BILLY shelves with LED lights. To be honest, I don’t think relying on ready-made solutions is very practical. Most LED strips are either too bulky or just stick on, which ruins the look over time. If anything, I would recommend DIY options instead, like attaching flat LED strips underneath the shelves and wiring them through a concealed cable channel. It might not be high-end, but it’s very effective and affordable.

whether the LEDs provide enough illumination and how best to supply powerBattery power? I would forget about that. These usually only last a few days at most with continuous use. If you want serious lighting, mains power is the way to go — ideally with a proper switch and possibly a dimmer. Are you planning a minimal modification or a fully integrated setup?
Oh yes, this topic is really exciting! A few months ago, I installed LED lights in my BILLY myself, and it turned out really great 🙂!
I used flat LED strips from a hardware store, which run on 12 V, and I stuck them under the shelves. The power supply is connected to a power adapter hidden behind the shelf. The effect is really impressive, especially in the evening it looks very elegant and you can immediately find what you are looking for.
I can definitely encourage you to try it yourself. With some basic DIY skills, even beginners can manage it!<br>
If you are interested in the exact technical details, I can gladly share them.

whether there are already suitable plug-in or built-in modules availableSo far, there are no officially IKEA-distributed LED retrofit kits for BILLY shelves. Various third-party suppliers offer universal LED strips that can be integrated into shelves using mounting tapes, screws, or clips. Important factors when choosing are:
- LEDs with sufficient brightness (at least 300 lumens/meter (91 lumens/foot) for shelves)
- Low voltage (12V) for safety
- As slim a design as possible for discreet installation

how best to power the lights – using batteries or mains electricityFrom a technical perspective, operation via mains power through an external 12V power supply is recommended. Battery operation is less practical for continuous lighting due to its limited energy capacity. For integration, it is advisable to route cables inside the shelf or along the back to avoid affecting the appearance. More information on installation and cable routing can be found in DIY guides on relevant DIY platforms.

This prevents harsh shadows and actually looks quite stylish. Also, motion sensor-controlled strips work really well—you don’t even have to think about switches 😉
