Good morning everyone, I am currently considering purchasing Billy shelves for my office and wondering if IKEA offers reinforced versions of these shelves.

Specifically, I am interested in whether there are BILLY models designed for higher loads or heavier weights, for example with stronger materials, thicker shelves, or additional stability features.

I generally like the standard shelves, but I need a solution that can consistently support more weight without sagging or becoming unstable.

Are there official versions or accessories available to increase their stability? Thanks for your helpful advice!

Hello jada2,

Basically, IKEA does not offer any “reinforced” premium versions of the BILLY bookcase. However, there are ways to increase its load capacity.

1. Thicker shelves: IKEA sells separate shelves for the BILLY system, but all have the same standard material thickness.

2. Reinforcement through assembly options: You can add side braces or back panels to improve stability.

3. Screws and brackets: Some people use additional metal brackets and screws at the corner joints to gain more stability.

4. Accessories like support strips under the shelves: These plastic or wooden strips help distribute the load more evenly onto the side panels.

My recommendation is to assess the load individually and, if necessary, use extra wall fixings.

I hope this helps you as a first overview.

There are no official BILLY shelves made with reinforced material.

For increased stability, you should use additional components or securely fix the shelf to the wall.

The typical load capacity of a BILLY shelf is about 15 kg per shelf board. According to IKEA, the shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating and are not designed for excessive loads.

A "reinforced" version is not offered. For higher loads, experts recommend either using heavy-duty shelving or a completely custom build made from solid wood or metal.

It is possible to replace individual shelves with stronger custom-made boards if you have good DIY skills.

That matches my experience as well. I find it questionable to assume increased load capacity without more detailed information from IKEA.

BILLY is designed for books and light decoration, not for industrial or heavy storage.

Therefore, if you have higher demands, you should either reinforce it technically or look for other shelving systems.

My question to you, jada2: How heavy are the planned loads exactly?

My question to you, jada2: What exact weight loads are you planning for?

Thanks for asking. I’m planning for 25–30 kg per shelf (55–66 lbs). This is for a combination of books and files, which is definitely more than the usual recommendation.

Also, the shelving needs to be permanently stable, with no sagging or wobbling. Wall mounting is not completely new to me, and I can definitely do it. It’s important to me that the shelves themselves are sturdier than standard products.

Do you have any suggestions for alternative shelf materials or solutions that could handle this?
