Hello everyone,

I noticed that one of the hinges on my IKEA Metod kitchen is either refurbished or even defective. My question is: How can I replace a damaged IKEA Metod hinge myself without having to remove the entire door or risk causing other damage? I’m looking for a reliable guide that covers both the removal of the old hinge and the installation of the new one. Additionally, I’m interested in which tools are absolutely necessary and whether there are differences between hinges that I should be aware of. Are there also any tips on how to properly adjust the door after replacing the hinge so that it fits perfectly again? I would really appreciate detailed explanations, as I usually do DIY work but don’t know every detail.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Marionna50,

Your question about replacing IKEA Metod hinges on your own is very well asked. I am happy to provide you with a clear step-by-step guide on how to proceed.

- First, carefully remove the kitchen door from the cabinet side. Most Metod hinges are attached with a clip system. Press the small lever on the hinge to release it.

- Unscrew the old hinges: The hinges are fixed with two or three screws on the inside of the door. Remove all screws completely.

- Make sure the new hinges are exactly the same, as there are different types for, for example, corner cabinets or other Metod models.

- Screw in the new hinge: Attach it in the same positions on the door.

- Reattach the door: Hook the hinge on the cabinet side and secure it with the clip.

- Adjustment: Metod hinges usually have screws to adjust the door sideways, vertically, and in depth to optimize the fit.

The tools you will need are usually a Phillips screwdriver or, even better, a cordless drill with the appropriate bit.

My tip: Work patiently, regularly check the alignment, and use a spirit level if needed.

If you are unsure about any step, feel free to ask!

I always find it interesting how IKEA often makes it seem like the components are some kind of complicated secret weapons – whereas Metod hinges are actually pretty standard and easy to replace.

I agree with that, but I would even say people tend to overcomplicate it. So why not just remove the door, take out the old hinge, put in the new one, and done? Sometimes the whole idea of adjusting is overrated – in 90% of cases, it fits quite well without a lot of fiddling.

But of course, for those who want to take it seriously, onMarcos’ tips are a solid guide. Still: stay relaxed, it’s not rocket science.

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide some detailed tips, especially for Marionna50, who is already quite experienced.

The precise replacement of an IKEA Metod hinge requires at least the following steps:

- Make sure the replacement hinge exactly matches the original (check the model number or the labeling on the packaging).
- Carefully detach the door from the cabinet to avoid any damage to the carcass or the door.
- Remove the screws: Note that the screws can be long, so it might help to have a second hand to hold the screw while unscrewing.
- Use a good screwdriver: A bit with a secure fit is essential to avoid damaging the screws.
- Standard Metod hinges usually offer three adjustment options:
- Side adjustment (left/right), typically with a screw on the side of the hinge.
- Depth adjustment (door closer to or further from the cabinet carcass).
- Height adjustment by changing the position of the screws.

After installation, you should open and close the door several times to ensure there is no excessive strain on the hinges.

Can you tell me whether the damaged hinge is on the door or on the cabinet carcass? Sometimes the corresponding mounting brackets inside are also affected, which can make the replacement a bit more complex.

If you provide more details (e.g., what type of door it is or if it is a corner hinge), I can offer more specific instructions.

Hello Marionna50 and all other screw fans!

I think the fun of screwing really comes through with the IKEA Metod hinge! 😄

I almost agree, but a little fine-tuning never hurts – especially if the door no longer sticks or hangs crooked afterward.

In short, I would say:
- Remove the door: Just press the lever on the hinge, lift the door slightly, and take it off.
- Unscrew the hinge: really easy with a good Phillips screwdriver.
- Attach the new hinge, click the door back in place.
- Check the doors and adjust slightly – just turn the adjustment dial on the hinge a bit, and everything fits perfectly.

Just be careful with more significant wear or if the furniture isn’t perfectly level anymore – then adjusting becomes necessary.

Stay relaxed, this is good DIY material!

Remove the door from its hinges, unscrew the hinge, attach the new hinge, click the door back into place, and adjust the screws for alignment. Tools: Phillips screwdriver or cordless drill with bit.
