ᐅ How can I optimize the cleaning of Ikea Metod kitchen countertops?

Temel37Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Metod kitchen with laminate countertops and I’m looking for effective ways to improve the cleaning of these kitchen work surfaces.
It is important to me that the surface is not damaged and that stubborn stains (e.g., baked-on grease, dried sauces, or water scale marks) can be removed efficiently.
Which cleaning agents, methods, or tools are particularly suitable? Are there any specific recommendations from Ikea or other users to maintain the durability of the countertop while making cleaning as easy as possible?
So far, I have mostly used all-purpose cleaners and microfiber cloths, but I believe there is room for improvement. I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or warnings about unsuitable products.

Hello Temel37,
first of all, an important general note: Ikea Metod laminate countertops often differ in material composition and surface coating depending on the model. This strongly affects which cleaning products are recommended.
Basically, the lacquer or sealing is usually very sensitive to alkaline or very aggressive cleaners. I therefore suggest the following steps:
- Always use only mild cleaning agents, ideally pH-neutral or slightly acidic. Vinegar water can remove stains but should not be used continuously to avoid damaging the seal.
- For stains such as greasy or dried-on food, you can gently clean with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water and then wipe off with clear water.
- Lime deposits from water can be treated with a vinegar-water mixture (e.g., 1:10), but only allow it to act briefly and be sure to wipe well afterward.
- Never use abrasive sponges or steel wool, as these cause microscopic scratches and will permanently damage the seal.
- For tougher dirt, there are special laminate cleaners which Ikea does not explicitly recommend but which often work well in practice.
Another question would be: how do you treat the countertop immediately after cleaning? Is regular oiling or conditioning planned? Some laminate types benefit from special protective treatments, others do not.
What is the current condition of your countertop? Are there already scratches or dull spots? That might influence the cleaning approach.

I don’t use any maintenance oils or similar products.

What is the current condition of your countertop? Are there already scratches or dull spots? The surface is still in very good condition, with a few minor scratches that are not particularly noticeable. The shine remains, although not perfect.
Your comments about pH levels and gentle treatment are helpful. Is there perhaps a recommended order of steps for dealing with stubborn grease that avoids being too harsh but remains effective?
And can you suggest a particular laminate cleaning brand that is known for being safe on these surfaces?
To optimize the cleaning of Ikea Metod laminate countertops, I recommend the following structured approach:
- Perform basic cleaning daily or as needed using a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water or mild dish soap.
- For stubborn grease stains, use a mixture of 70% water and 30% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to effectively dissolve the grease. Wipe afterwards with clean water.
- Remove limescale marks best with diluted vinegar solution (ratio approximately 1:10) to prevent damage to the surface.
- Never use abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners.
- Special laminate cleaners can be used when necessary; it is recommended to choose brands with test results or product-related certifications. Traditional products like Frosch laminate cleaner have proven effective.
Regular oiling is not necessary for laminate surfaces and can even be harmful. Polishing is generally not recommended.
Please ensure all cleaning residues are completely removed and dry the surface with a clean microfiber cloth to avoid water spots.
