Hello everyone,

I have noticed some unsightly damage on a few corners of my IKEA Platsa furniture, which unfortunately seems to be quite common due to the rather thin edges of the furniture. Since I really appreciate this otherwise very flexible system, I would like to know the best way to repair such damaged corners without noticeable differences afterward or compromising stability.

I imagine that using some kind of filler or wood putty might work, but there may also be other, more professional methods. I am especially interested in techniques and materials that work well with the specific surface of Platsa — usually melamine or laminate — and do not cause unsightly color mismatches or surface abrasions.

Does anyone have experience with this or can offer advice on how to repair damaged corners on Platsa furniture?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Latefa,

There are a few proven methods for repairing damaged corners on IKEA PLATSA furniture that I’d like to explain in more detail. Since PLATSA is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, you should be careful not to cause further damage to the surface.

- First, it’s recommended to sand down any loose parts or rough edges to create a smooth surface.
- Then you can use an MDF or wood filler that adheres well and can be sanded later. Make sure to choose a filler that matches the color or use a white filler.
- After drying, you can carefully sand the area again and touch it up with a matching furniture or repair pen.
- Alternatively, there are special edge repair kits with wax sticks that visually conceal the damage quite well.

It is important not to apply too much material to avoid creating uneven edges on the corner.

If the corner is severely damaged, replacing individual parts or using corner protectors could also be an option.

If you like, I can provide tips on specific materials and where to source them.

As a quick solution, you can apply wood filler, sand it smooth after drying, and retouch it with a suitable touch-up marker. For the surface, a repair marker designed for melamine boards is ideal.

Hello Latefa,

here are some precise tips for corner repair on IKEA PLATSA:

- Material: Use a high-quality wood or MDF filler that sands well and does not shrink excessively.
- Preparation: The damaged area should be clean, free of grease, and well sanded.
- Application: Apply the filler thinly and in layers to achieve a smooth, even surface.
- Finishing: Sand with fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher) and match the color using furniture repair markers designed specifically for melamine surfaces.

Additionally, it often helps to use protective caps made of plastic or metal for furniture edges, especially on frequently stressed corners.

Caution: Do not use aggressive chemicals when cleaning the repaired area, as melamine surfaces are sensitive.

These tips are based on proven methods for particleboard with laminate coating.

Thanks for this suggestion, it sounds interesting. Could you specifically say where I can find corner guards that visually match PLATSA? I would like to stay as close as possible to the original look.

Do you have any recommendations for brands or types of products that work particularly well? There are many options, and I want to avoid the filler cracking or peeling off later.

From my perspective, the repair should also be reasonably durable since the corners are frequently subject to stress. Stability is also a priority for me.

Thank you very much for the support!

Hello Latefa,

Regarding your questions: Corner protectors can be found at hardware stores or specialty retailers – especially those made of transparent plastic or aluminum are practical, as they are barely noticeable.

For filler putty, I recommend brands like "Caparol" or "Molto" for wood repair. When choosing, look for flexible or stretchable types, as they adhere better to particleboard and are less prone to cracking.

Before application, clean the surface thoroughly and sand it lightly to ensure better adhesion of the glue or filler. Finally, you can add a small amount of matching acrylic paint if the color tone is not an exact match.

For multiple damages, it is generally also advisable to glue small protective angles with assembly adhesive.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
