Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling several Ikea Metod tall cabinets that will be fitted with built-in appliances such as an oven, microwave, and dishwasher. My main goal is to make the construction as efficient and stable as possible without compromising functionality or risking damage to the appliances.

I am particularly wondering:
- What is the best assembly sequence to safely and conveniently install the appliances?
- Are there specific fastening techniques or materials recommended for integrating the appliances?
- What should I pay attention to regarding the load-bearing capacity and stability of the cabinets, especially when several appliances are installed?
- What tips and tricks can you share for handling the quite heavy appliances during installation?

I have some experience with furniture assembly but have not yet built large kitchen units with electrical appliances. I am very much looking forward to your detailed advice and practical insights!

Hello Ken10,

Your request is definitely comprehensive, and it’s worth carefully planning the installation step by step. I’ll describe a proven process here that will hopefully save you a lot of work:

- Preparation: First, thoroughly check all parts, especially the fasteners and the dimensions of the appliances. Pay attention to IKEA-specific notes regarding load capacity, particularly for tall cabinets.

- Assemble cabinet carcasses: Put together the basic structure of the Metod cabinet modules, but don’t fully attach the back panels yet. This will make it easier to handle the appliances later on.

- Installing appliances before final fastening: I recommend loosely placing the appliances first to check the fit. Usually, you will need to secure the appliances with screws or clips at certain points; these fasteners are detailed in the respective manufacturer’s manuals.

- Pay attention to load distribution: This is a crucial point. Appliances like ovens are quite heavy and put stress on the cabinet structure. Make sure the adjustable feet of the appliances rest flat on the floor or are stabilized with a suitable base.

- Cable and water connections: It helps if you plan all the connections before final assembly. Cable entries should not be pinched, as this can cause damage over time.

- Final assembly: After installing the appliances, secure the back panels to ensure overall stability.

A small tip at the end: Always use the screws and dowels specified in the assembly instructions. Cheaper alternatives usually don’t hold well.

Can you provide some details about the room where you are assembling? Are there any structural restrictions or special electrical requirements?

Thanks for the detailed overview, Wyatt! Yes, the room is a typical kitchen with a solid wall where the tall cabinets will be mounted. The electrical setup is already prepared, with outlets available for the appliances, but the water connections are only relevant for one of the cabinets (dishwasher).

I will attach the installation to the wall, but I’m unsure whether I should add extra reinforcements on the cabinet sides, especially for the oven and the dishwasher. Do you think that’s necessary?

I would recommend additional reinforcements, especially for heavy equipment. Heavy-duty brackets on the sides can improve stability.

As a general rule, it is advisable to secure the Metod tall cabinets to the wall, especially when electrical appliances are installed inside. IKEA’s mounting kits include suitable brackets for this purpose. Additional reinforcements are recommended if you combine heavy loads such as an oven and a dishwasher.

- Use at least two wall fixings per cabinet module.
- For appliances with vibration-prone parts (e.g., dishwasher), it helps to install thin metal braces or reinforcement plates that connect the cabinet sides.
- Ensure that the appliance mounts inside the cabinet are firmly secured and do not allow any movement.

One more note: Pay attention to the floor level. Irregularities can cause uneven stress on the appliances and cabinets.

Thanks for the clear advice! Do you also have good tips for appliance installation itself? I have often read that appliances should be installed only after assembling the cabinet. However, with Metod it’s not always easy because of the tight fittings. How should I handle the order of installation for the oven and microwave?

Would it make sense to first install only the side panels, insert the appliances, and then attach the front completely? Or is it better to build the entire unit first and then slide the appliances in?
