Hello everyone,

I am planning to order some replacement parts for my Malm bed, as a few screws and drawer slides have become a bit loose. Before I start ordering individual parts, I have a question: Based on your experience, which replacement parts for the Malm bed are the most important and should definitely be kept in stock for maintenance or minor repairs?

I am especially interested in the components that are subject to the most wear and tear or tend to cause issues the fastest, so I can save myself time and avoid long waiting periods. Perhaps you can also share tips on what to look for when choosing replacement parts to extend the bed’s lifespan. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hello Lekeo6,

Firstly, it’s a good approach to choose spare parts carefully! Generally, for a Malm bed, I would focus on three main components:

1. Screws and bolts: Often loose or worn out due to stress. It’s important to get replacements with exactly the same dimensions, as incorrect screws can compromise stability.

2. Drawer slides: These tend to become rough or stick over time. A new set of slides usually ensures smoother operation.

3. Wooden parts or connecting fittings: Especially with older Malm beds, wood joints can loosen or fittings may break.

Tip: Note down the IKEA part numbers for the spare parts and order them from the retailer, preferably original parts. Cheap knock-offs can cause fitting issues.

For example, I once had the problem that the drawer runners on the right side became increasingly stiff. After replacing the slides, they worked like new again.

Summary: Keep a stock of matching screws, get new drawer slides, and replace fittings if needed. This is usually enough to maintain full functionality.

Hello Lekeo6,

What SUDAN has already explained very well, I would like to add some more technical details. Especially with Malm beds, the so-called "connector bolts" (often also referred to as "dowel bolts") are crucial for stability. These wear out through repeated assembly and disassembly or due to movements in the structure. A key point is the stress on the corner joints, which is often underestimated.

Additionally, the drawer slides in Malm models are not just simple runners but sometimes feature a ball-bearing system. When replacing them, it is important to avoid ordering basic metal slides, as these can significantly affect the smoothness of operation and the weight handling of the drawers.

Another weak point are the "cam lock fittings," which—simply put—hold the side panels to the bed frame. They can break or become loose with frequent disassembly. It is helpful to keep spare parts on hand since otherwise the entire structure can become wobbly.

Finally, a note on wood care: Malm bedroom furniture is usually veneered or lacquered. If the surface around the connectors becomes brittle, these areas should be carefully treated with special furniture wax to prevent the wood from swelling and to maintain long-lasting stability.

I am also curious: what year is your Malm bed from? That can affect the availability of spare parts.

Thank you for the very helpful details! I bought my Malm bed in 2016, so it’s still relatively new. I assume original replacement parts might still be available for that model, right? My main concern is to stock some parts preventively so I don’t have to wait a long time for replacements if something breaks.

Also, I’d like to know if there are any recommended modifications or upgrades to increase durability. I’m not very familiar with this, but I’m considering possibly using screw sets with stainless properties or reinforced rails as a precaution.

A very good point. If you want to proactively improve the Malm bed, I would actually recommend switching to stainless steel screws, as these are more resistant to rust and mechanical wear. This especially applies to screws and bolts in areas that may be exposed to moisture—such as in the bedroom if ventilation is infrequent.

For the drawer slides, you might consider installing a higher-quality sliding system that uses ball bearings, which provides smoother and quieter operation. However, it is important to check whether the dimensions match exactly, since IKEA parts often have unique sizes.

Additionally, it is advisable to regularly tighten all connections and lightly lubricate them (for example, with silicone spray on metal components) to prevent early wear. As a modification, I would generally caution against too many third-party replacement parts unless they are certified, as fit and load-bearing capacity can otherwise vary unpredictably.

In summary: use stainless steel fasteners, upgrade to better slides only if the dimensions are an exact fit, and maintain regularly for the best durability.

What a great discussion here! 🙂

I believe most of us not only realize the importance of small parts like screws and rails, but also how much they ensure our daily comfort. I once experienced how a single broken drawer rail completely disrupted the operation of the bed – it can be really frustrating!

That’s why I think it’s a great idea to keep a small stock of these parts on hand. Especially when you want to maintain the bed stress-free or handle minor repairs yourself without having to wait.

I’ve also had very good experiences with stainless steel screws – they have withstood all kinds of challenges for me even after years! It’s always such a relief when something lasts and works well for a long time!!! 😉

I wish everyone good luck in maintaining their Malm beds – and just remember: small spare parts can often prevent big headaches!!!
