Hello everyone, I would like to customize my Ikea Besta shelving unit and am wondering how to best integrate wooden strips and various decorative elements into the design. I have some experience with furniture building and understand that it’s not just about aesthetics but also about functionality and stability. My goal is to enhance the classic white Besta furniture with wooden strips, possibly oak or walnut, while also creating interesting highlights with decorative elements such as metal handles, plant holders, or small shelf inserts. I am interested both in the practical implementation (drilling, gluing, screwing) and advice on choosing materials that will bond well with the Besta carcass. Has anyone worked on similar projects or can offer specific tips on how to customize the shelf to be sturdy and visually appealing? Thanks in advance for any advice and shared experiences!

Hey miropra, great project! I also upgraded my Besta furniture with wooden strips made of spruce and some oiled oak wood. It’s important to cut the strips precisely and attach them using wood glue and small screws – that really adds stability. For decorative elements, I used simple metal brackets mounted inside so they’re unobtrusive but still functional. If you want to integrate plant holders, small metal or wood holders fixed with screws on the inside work well. Pro tip: use matte screw heads or countersink the screws to keep the surface looking neat. Don’t hesitate to try it – it’s a lot of fun and gives a really unique result! 😊

That’s a good idea. Additionally, I recommend using high-quality wooden strips, preferably made of hardwood (e.g., oak or walnut), treated with clear varnish or oil before installation. This protects against moisture and wear. For fastening, both pre-drilled screws and two-component adhesive are suitable, especially if you want to avoid visible screws, though the adhesive should only be used for areas with light loads. When working with metal handles, it’s best to use adapter plates that can be screwed to the cabinet body to prevent damage. Also, a precise cutting plan helps to get the wooden strips cut to exact measurements, either at a DIY store or a carpenter’s workshop.

Interesting, but have you considered that adding extra wooden strips could affect the weight and load capacity of the shelving unit? Especially with furniture like Besta, which is designed for flexible use, uncontrolled addition of decorative elements can compromise stability. It would be wise to first perform a load analysis and carefully plan the mounting points for the strips and decorative elements. The type of connection is also crucial – drilling too aggressively could weaken the wooden structure, while too weak attachment could jeopardize durability.

I would recommend using thinner wooden panels covering larger surfaces as accents instead of solid wooden strips, which you can attach softly to avoid gaps and tension. Additionally, make sure the decorative elements are not only aesthetic but also functional, so the furniture’s usability is maintained.
