barrasmus15 Feb 2016 19:43Hello everyone,
I have the following problem with my Billy bookshelf door: When opening, it squeaks quite loudly and sometimes has slight trouble turning in or out—in some cases, it even sticks, making it difficult to open. The door hasn’t been installed for very long, and neither the hinge nor the door panel show any obvious damage or warping. I have already tried applying some lubricant, but without much success.
I’m particularly interested in how to best identify the cause of the squeaking and sticking in a BILLY door, and which steps are recommended to reliably and permanently fix the issue. Are there any special tools or materials that have proven effective? Does the hinge need specific adjustment or replacement, and if so, what should be considered?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

First of all, it’s good that you’ve already thought about lubricant, because squeaking usually indicates friction on metal or plastic parts. With the BILLY door, the hinge is mainly responsible for proper opening and closing.
I recommend the following step-by-step approach:
1. Visual inspection: Check the hinges for visible dirt, rust, or worn bearings. Dust or dried grime can quickly cause the movement to seize.
2. Cleaning: Remove dust and dirt with a cloth or brush and, if possible, use a cotton swab to reach small gaps.
3. Lubrication: Use a high-quality WD-40 or a special silicone spray that doesn’t become sticky. Spray sparingly on the joints.
4. Adjustment: The BILLY door often has screws on the hinges to adjust its position. Make sure the door is not hanging too low or too high, which could cause it to jam.
5. Test: Open and close the door several times to spread the lubricant evenly.
I’m also curious: Is the jamming at a specific spot or does it vary? And have you checked whether the door is hanging straight (i.e., not warped or shifted)?
Adjusting the screws usually requires small Allen keys or Phillips screwdrivers; the IKEA assembly kit for the BILLY door should include instructions. If none of this helps, the hinge may be damaged or bent and should be replaced.
Best regards!

Hello barrasmus,
In addition to pauPierce, I would like to clearly and precisely address the most common causes and solutions for squeaking and sticking issues with BILLY doors:
- Squeaking usually results from missing or insufficient lubrication of the hinges. Silicone spray is preferred because it does not become sticky and protects the joints in the long term.
- Sticking is mostly caused by misalignment of the door. Especially with BILLY, it can happen that the door was not properly adjusted or has shifted slightly due to load.
- Checking the fastening screws is important: If they are too loose, the door can sag and rub; if tightened too much, it can cause deformation.
A systematic approach would be:
1. Align the door using the adjustment screws on the hinge.
2. Clean the hinges from dust and dirt.
3. Lubricate with a suitable lubricant.
4. Check the fastening and tighten or replace defective parts if necessary.
Using a spirit level to ensure the door is hanging correctly is helpful.
Best regards

Hello barrasmus,
I also have a BILLY door and experienced similar issues. It often requires some patience when a door squeaks or sticks, as the cause is usually in the details.
If you like, I can share my usual process for resolving these problems:
- First, remove the door if possible to thoroughly clean the hinges.
- Then, use a fine brush to dust off the joints when dry.
- After that, apply oil or silicone spray and open and close the door several times to allow the lubricant to spread.
- When reinstalling, I always make sure the hinges are tight but not overly tightened.
I would also like to point out that squeaking can sometimes indicate wear, even with proper maintenance. If the door has been subjected to uneven stress for years, the hinge or door frame may be slightly warped, which is usually hard to see from the outside.
Feel free to ask if you want more details or an explanation of any of the steps! 🙂

barrasmus16 Feb 2016 09:18Thank you all for your detailed responses!
@pauPierce: The sticking seems to occur mainly in the lower half of the door when I open it too far. I would say the door is not hanging straight, that’s a good point. The screws on the hinge appear to be tight, but maybe not evenly tightened.
@lau-mar: The idea with the level is great, I wanted to check anyway if the door is crooked.
@Annedeo: Thanks for the tip about removing it, I’ll try that tomorrow. If I may ask you one more detailed question: Can the hinges of the BILLY door be purchased individually or only as part of the complete door package?
I’ll get back to you once I find out more.

yes, that’s an important question. IKEA usually sells the BILLY hinges individually as spare parts. They are listed under the name "door hinges for BILLY" and can be ordered either in-store or online. This is convenient if only the hinge is affected.
Important: When ordering, make sure to check the exact model number of your BILLY door, as there have been minor changes over the years. This helps you avoid compatibility issues.
If you haven’t had a chance to inspect the hinges closely yet, it’s worth doing so to assess their exact condition.
And one more important note: sometimes adjusting the hinges is enough without needing a complete replacement.
Good luck!
