Hello everyone,
I would like to equip my Ikea PLATSA shelving units with casters to make the furniture more flexible to move around the room. Unfortunately, I can’t find any official casters specifically designed for PLATSA. My question is: How can I add casters to Ikea PLATSA shelves without losing stability or damaging the structure? Which casters are most suitable, how can they be securely attached, and are there any specific recommendations regarding load capacity or dimensions I should pay attention to?
Thank you in advance for your experiences and tips!

Use sturdy screws (at least M4 or M5) and, if necessary, anchors or reinforcements to improve the screw connection.Thank you for this helpful tip.
Is there a specific area on the Platsa system that is particularly suitable for mounting? Do I need to take anything into account with the lower base panels, or are the side and back panels also strong enough to support casters?
And how about the load capacity when connecting multiple modules? Can I attach casters to each module, or is it more practical to fit them only on the end modules?

If you connect multiple units, you should use fewer casters per unit and focus on stability. Casters only on the outer units often work better, allowing you to move the entire assembly as one.
It works great—I’ve done it myself. This way, you save weight and can still move everything easily.

It was important to me that the casters have brakes because I wanted to prevent the shelving unit from rolling away unintentionally.I can only agree with that. Mobility is great, but safety should always be considered.
I also tried attaching casters to my PLATSA unit. It was important to me that the floor where the casters rest is level. Otherwise, even with brakes, annoying movements can occur.
I doweled the casters at the bottom and fastened them with M5 screws. For the load, I planned a safety margin of 25% beyond the maximum expected weight to ensure the casters don’t wear out too quickly.
If anyone has concerns, locking mechanisms can also be installed to, so to speak, “freeze” the furniture when needed.
