Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Billy shelves. The hinges squeak when opening and closing the doors, which is quite annoying over time. I suspect it’s due to lubrication or the mechanism, but I’m not entirely sure.

My question is: What is the best way to fix squeaky Billy hinges without affecting their function or appearance?

Are there specific lubricants that work well, or might some parts need to be replaced?

I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences, preferably with a brief guide or procedure so I can fix the issue permanently.

Hello Duixkar,

I’m happy to help you with a simple step-by-step guide to fix squeaky BILLY hinges.

1. First, I recommend checking the hinges thoroughly on both the door and the cabinet frame. Sometimes the squeaking is caused by loose screws, so check those first and gently tighten them.

2. If the screws are tight, clean the hinge areas thoroughly. Dust and dirt deposits can cause squeaking. It’s best to use a clean, dry cloth and if necessary, some isopropanol for cleaning.

3. For lubrication, I suggest using a dry silicone spray or a special PTFE spray. Oils or grease tend to attract dust and may make the problem worse.

4. Spray the lubricant sparingly onto the moving parts of the hinge, especially the pivot point, then move the door several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

5. If the squeaking persists, replacing the hinges might be a good idea, as they can wear out over time.

Summary: Check screws, clean, lubricate with silicone spray. This should usually eliminate the squeaking.

If you have any questions about specific steps, just ask!

Hello Duixkar,

I’d like to go into a bit more detail because, especially with BILLY shelves, the hinges are quite sturdy, but the exact cause of squeaking can vary. It’s worth approaching this systematically.

First: The typical BILLY hinge is a stainless steel hinge with a plastic bushing at the joint. Over time, this bushing dries out and loses its lubrication, which causes the squeaking.

Here is my suggestion:

1. Check the screws: Make sure the hinges are firmly attached to both the cabinet and the door. Loose fittings can cause unwanted movement in the hinge, which produces noise.

2. Clean the surfaces: Use a lint-free cloth with a bit of isopropanol to remove dirt – avoid using water, as wood can swell.

3. Lubricant: I personally recommend a PTFE spray (polytetrafluoroethylene) because it is very thin and doesn’t gum up. Silicone spray is an alternative that often works well and is free of resins.

4. Application: It’s important to only lubricate the moving parts. Don’t spray the entire hinge but focus on the pivot where the plastic or metal parts rotate.

5. Open and close the door several times to help distribute the spray.

An interesting technical point is that many users accidentally use oils that provide short-term relief but cause deposits. These deposits lead to more noise over time.

Potential mistake: Some people apply too much lubricant to the hinges, and some use WD-40 as a permanent solution – this softens rubber and plastic and isn’t ideal for BILLY hinges.

If you’re unsure which product you are using, feel free to post the details and I can help with the selection.

How old are your BILLY shelves, and how intensively are the doors used? That could also provide clues.

That’s a helpful tip, thanks. My shelves are about 4 years old and are opened daily.

I’m also wondering if I need to remove the hinge completely for lubrication, or can I apply it directly without taking it off?

I’d prefer to avoid removing the doors unless absolutely necessary.

In most cases, it is not necessary to remove the doors completely to lubricate the hinges. The pivot points are easily accessible from the outside. Simply spray the appropriate lubricant (silicone or PTFE) with a fine nozzle onto the pivot point and open and close the door several times.

Only if the squeaking is very severe or the lubrication is insufficient might it make sense to remove the door for a more thorough cleaning of the hinges or even replacement.

So: try lubricating with the door in place first.

Spray, move, done. Do not use oil, as it attracts dust.
