Hello everyone, I am currently looking into which replacement parts for Billy shelves are easiest to replace on your own without requiring extensive tools or specialized craftsmanship skills. I am particularly interested in commonly needed parts such as shelves, screws, or connectors, but also options for replacing damaged side panels or back panels. Who has experience with do-it-yourself replacements and can share tips on which parts are simple to change yourself and what to watch out for? Thanks in advance!

Hello Renra48, I’m familiar with this issue, especially when you don’t want to call a professional every time or the warranty has expired.

I have replaced shelves myself several times; this usually works without any tools since you just remove the shelf supports and place the new shelf. It gets more difficult with back panels, which are sometimes nailed or stapled – this requires some patience and the right tools. But generally, simpler parts like shelves and plastic feet can be replaced easily. It’s worth tightening all screws before replacing anything, as that often helps the furniture last longer.

If you are working with specific replacement parts, I could also share my experience with screws and wall plugs.

Shelves and floor supports are the simplest. Screws and small connectors are also straightforward. Changing back panels is often fiddly with BILLY.

As an addition: BILLY shelves are mostly modular furniture with standardized components. The shelves are usually mounted on shelf supports, and the clamping mechanism allows for tool-free replacement.

This is due to the design. In contrast, back panels are mostly nailed or stapled, making replacement much more complicated. The screws used to attach the side panels can typically be removed with a Phillips screwdriver without much trouble, but this depends on the age and condition of the shelf.

Conclusion: The shelves and shelf supports are the easiest parts to replace for DIY assembly or repair.

As mentioned before, shelves are the easiest parts to replace. Screws work as well, but back panels are less suitable.

Hello everyone, I would like to add a brief guide here on how to replace shelves in BILLY units, as this is often requested:

1. First, unload the shelf by removing all books.
2. Gently pry the shelf supports, which are usually made of plastic or metal, out of their recess with a fingernail or a small flathead screwdriver.
3. Remove the damaged shelf.
4. Place the new shelf and reinsert the shelf supports.

Important: The shelf supports must be placed exactly into the designated holes; otherwise, the shelf will not sit securely.

Also important: For screws, it is recommended to carefully check whether the screw head is intact beforehand to avoid stripping.

The whole process usually takes about 10–15 minutes.
