Hello everyone, I need some advice regarding my IKEA Billy shelves. I want to replace the shelves in an older unit because they are slightly warped and damaged. My question is how to best remove and replace the shelves without having to take the entire unit apart or losing stability. Are there any specific tricks or special accessories that should be used? Also, I’m curious if there are official replacement parts that fit exactly, or if it’s better to have custom boards cut to size. Thanks for your tips!

You can easily remove the shelves by pressing the small plastic or metal pins inward and carefully lifting the board. Replacements are available directly from IKEA, or you can simply use chipboard cut to the right size.

Hello GOBIJA, I understand that you want to receive your BILLY shelf. Most BILLY shelves use small pins as supports, which are inserted into pre-drilled holes. To replace the shelves, simply unload the unit as much as possible, then lift the shelves slightly and either gently squeeze the pins or carefully pull them out. If the shelves sag a little, this is often the case with older models. Official replacement shelves can usually be ordered from IKEA if they are still available. If not, it's no problem to have custom boards cut by a carpenter or at a hardware store—just make sure to use the correct thickness and material to maintain stability. If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

To replace the shelves, simply empty them first. Then pull out the retaining clips and carefully lift the board. It is best to choose new boards with the same thickness and surface finish.

Thanks, that sounds convenient. Does anyone know if IKEA’s replacement shelves have the same dimensions as the older models? I've noticed slight differences in depth on my shelf.

Is it possible to use OSB boards instead of particle boards, or is that unsuitable because of the appearance and possibly stability?
I’m unsure because the shelf is clearly visible in the living room.

Hello GOBIJA, regarding your questions: The replacement shelves from IKEA generally fit all current BILLY bookcases, but there have been occasional minor changes in dimensions over the years. Since your bookcase is a bit older, there might be slight differences. It is advisable to check directly with IKEA for the exact dimensions or replacements for the specific model.

Regarding the material: OSB panels are significantly more durable than particle boards, but they have a more rustic and somewhat uneven appearance, making them less suitable for a living room shelf unless you prefer an industrial look. For a piece of furniture with a visible surface, I would recommend using high-quality MDF or veneered particle boards instead. These are easier to paint or varnish and have a smoother surface.

If the shelf boards are only supported by the bookcase without affecting the overall stability of the structure, replacing them is relatively simple. Make sure that the support clips or pins holding the shelves are not damaged and still fit securely.
