Hello everyone, I am currently planning a new kitchen layout using Ikea Metod modules and want to focus strongly on ergonomic aspects as well as space-saving installation. My question is: What is the best way to design a Metod kitchen ergonomically, so that working height, storage space, and freedom of movement are optimally coordinated? Are there any proven installation tips or clever tricks to make efficient use of the available space without compromising on comfort and functionality? I would appreciate examples, recommendations, or personal experiences from you that are specifically tailored to Metod kitchen units.

For an ergonomic design of an Ikea Metod kitchen unit, I recommend customizing the worktop height individually. The standard range is between 85 and 95 cm (33 to 37 inches), depending on body height. This helps prevent back pain caused by work surfaces that are too low or too high. Additionally, the base cabinets should be constructed with varying depths and widths to minimize walking distances. For space-saving installation, corner solutions with revolving carousels or pull-out drawers are advisable, as they make more effective use of corner storage. Installing fronts in standard increments ranging from 20 to 60 cm (8 to 24 inches) allows for flexible planning that can also accommodate small kitchens. If ceiling height permits, wall cabinets can be added above to increase vertical storage space. It is also important to plan free loading and unloading zones around the sink and stove to improve workflow.

An important aspect of ergonomic design is the arrangement of work zones – sink, stove, and countertop should be positioned in a triangle to minimize unnecessary movement. Ikea Metod offers various module widths with a 20 cm (8 inch) grid, providing great flexibility. To save space during installation, it helps to leave as little gap as possible between the modules and to choose narrow tall cabinets, for example, for the oven. Using internal drawers and pull-out cutting boards can create additional workspace. The use of soft-close functions for drawers also contributes to ease of use.

Ergonomics are achieved through appropriate countertop height and easy access to the most frequently used cabinets. Corner cabinets with a carousel or magic corners are crucial for saving space.

Additional information: The depth of the Metod base cabinets at 60cm (24 inches) works well for most appliances and countertops. When space is limited, it is also possible to combine base cabinets with a depth of 37cm (15 inches) to keep walkways more open. From an ergonomic perspective, wall cabinets should not be too deep so as not to interfere with the working height. Height-adjustable cover panels can help to install kitchen units flush, even with uneven walls. For space-saving installation without gaps, planning with detailed drawings and the Ikea planner in advance is recommended.

That’s an important tip, thanks! What is the best way to measure the ideal worktop height? Is it enough to stand in front of a table and determine the elbow height? Or are there more precise standards?

The modular measurement sounds like a good basis for planning quite accurately from the start. I want to avoid gaps and unnecessary extra width as much as possible.

Do you also know practical examples of how to use tall wall cabinets efficiently without overwhelming the kitchen space? I’m thinking about open shelves or slim tall cabinets next to wall cabinets.
