Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How do you properly clean BILLY shelves from IKEA without damaging the surface or risking unsightly scratches and discoloration? I know the shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, but I’m unsure which cleaning products and methods are best suited to protect the surface while still cleaning thoroughly. I’m particularly interested in specific recommendations regarding the type of cleaning cloths, cleaning liquids (whether mild or specialized), and the procedure—such as whether to only wipe with a damp cloth or if occasional dry polishing is also acceptable. Perhaps someone has experience with stains or stubborn dust that accumulates during daily use. Looking forward to tips on how to maintain the appearance long-term without causing damage. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the cleaning of BILLY shelves, I recommend the following approach: Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents containing solvents or strong alkalis, as these can damage the melamine coating and cause discoloration or surface roughening. The best method is to use a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral dish detergent. After wiping with the damp cloth, carefully polish the surface with a dry, clean cloth to prevent water spots or streaks. Stubborn stains can usually be removed with a gentle sponge and a small amount of dish detergent, but avoid scrubbing to prevent damaging the protective layer. In general, it is important to clean as gently and sparingly as possible, as BILLY shelves do not have high-quality lacquered surfaces but are primarily designed to be functional and cost-effective. There is always a residual risk of minor scratches or discoloration if not treated properly.

A soft microfiber cloth works best

Great tip! I’d like to add: definitely avoid abrasive sponges or scouring agents. And yes, using a mild dish soap is really important—I always use a gentle detergent for washing dishes, and it works perfectly.

If the surface is really dirty, you can use a vinegar solution, but only very sparingly and don’t leave it on for too long, otherwise the surface will become dull over time.

My secret tip: after cleaning, gently wipe the surfaces again with a dry cloth—this keeps the BILLY shelf looking well-maintained and fresh even after a long time. 🙂

Just use a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap. Do not use alcohol or abrasive cleaners. Afterwards, dry the surface to prevent water spots.

Additionally, it should be noted that brief cleaning with a damp cloth is generally not a problem when following the mentioned tips. It is very important not to let any moisture soak in—prolonged exposure of water on the surface can cause swelling at the edges.

For removing stubborn stains such as permanent marker or adhesive residues, special melamine sponges (often sold as “Magic Erasers”) can be effective, but you should test them in an inconspicuous spot first, as they may cause slight abrasion marks.

As a rule of thumb: less is more, be patient when cleaning, and avoid using harsh chemicals to extend the shelf’s lifespan.
