Hello everyone,

I am planning to move an IKEA Hemnes sideboard at home and want to ensure the transport is as safe as possible. Since the piece is mostly made of wood and some fittings don’t seem very sturdy, I’m wondering what to pay special attention to when transporting the IKEA Hemnes.

Specifically, I’m interested in:
- What is the best way to disassemble the furniture if I want to take it apart?
- Which parts are particularly delicate or should be given extra protection?
- Are there any experiences with transporting it in a car trunk versus a van?
- Do you have any tips to avoid scratches or damage during transport?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Additional Information:

The fittings on the Hemnes are usually made of metal, but the attachment points in the wood can be somewhat less durable.

Important:
- When disassembling, only loosen screws with the appropriate tools to avoid damaging the holes.
- The connection points (wooden dowels, metal brackets) often include light particleboard panels that can break if twisted.

During transport, the furniture surface should be protected from mechanical damage with blankets or foam pads. Even minor shocks can cause scratches.

Transport in a closed vehicle with adequate load securing is strongly recommended.

Summary:
- Be careful with the attachment points
- Protect surfaces and edges carefully
- Pack small parts securely
- Choose a transport method with enough space and safety

If you don’t completely disassemble the sideboard, be sure to well-padded edges and surfaces. Otherwise, dents are inevitable. Remove the back panel, as it is thin anyway.

Thanks in advance for the helpful answers!

I’m still wondering: How can you best protect the joint holes when screwing and dismantling? Are there any tricks to prevent the wood from splitting, especially if the furniture needs to be moved frequently?

Also, I’m interested in possible differences between HEMNES and other IKEA furniture when it comes to transport.

Can you share any insights on this?

The fittings on the HEMNES are usually made of metal, but some of the attachment points in the wood are less durable.

This observation is important to protect the joint holes:

- Pre-drill when reassembling or, if old holes are worn, repair them with wood filler.
- Tighten the screws carefully, avoiding fully tightening them immediately to prevent splitting the wood.
- If you plan to disassemble the furniture frequently, it is advisable to reinforce the holes with suitable dowels or small metal sleeves.

For comparison with other IKEA furniture: HEMNES is traditionally made from solid pine wood, which can be more robust than particleboard or MDF models. On the other hand, the joint holes are not hardwood slats like those in beds or solid wood dressers from other manufacturers. Therefore, careful handling is required.

I hope this helps you with your planning.

Wood glue can help when the screw holes start to fray. Let it dry briefly before reassembling.

Hello,

for transporting IKEA HEMNES, I recommend a systematic approach:

- Step 1: Complete and careful disassembly following the original instructions. Pay special attention to inserts and small parts.
- Step 2: Packaging the individual components with blankets and edge protectors. Especially the side wooden panels and doors require cushioning.
- Step 3: Careful storage during transport: flat and not stacked. Back panels must be stored separately and supported with firm bases.
- Step 4: Use the original screws when reassembling and replace any damaged parts.

Common mistakes:
- Transporting the furniture fully assembled in tight spaces
- Inconsistent packaging with improper cushioning
- Losing small connecting parts

These tips help preserve the lifespan of the HEMNES and ensure damage-free furniture transport.
