Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my Pax wardrobe and wonder if it is possible to equip it with custom-made doors that are not from the standard IKEA range. Specifically, I am interested in whether these doors are mechanically compatible, meaning they can be mounted on the existing hinges and rails, and if there are any restrictions regarding material, weight, or design. Has anyone had experience with this or can offer recommendations on what to watch out for? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the answers so far! I have one more question: How exactly do you mount the existing hinges on the new custom doors? Do you have to drill the holes yourself, or are there service providers who prepare this in advance? I ask because I am reasonably handy, but I’m not sure if I can achieve the necessary millimeter-level accuracy to continue using height and lateral adjustments.

The requirement is that you specify exactly which type of hinge it is (usually IKEA’s own or compatible concealed hinges) and provide the correct measurements and distances.
If you want to drill the holes yourself, you need an accurate template and a steady hand. This is often not easy, as small deviations can later cause the doors to hang unevenly or be difficult to adjust.
Therefore, I recommend having the drilling done by a professional. Many manufacturers offer this as a complete service, so you only need to hang the doors on the cabinet yourself.
Hello Sevin,
I fitted my Pax wardrobe with custom-made doors to add a bit more style. I used the hinges from IKEA, and had the drill holes made by a carpenter using templates.
Sure, it took a lot of preparation, but it was worth it! The doors are very sturdy and open smoothly.
I can definitely confirm that! And if you like, you can decorate the front with decorative handles or effects. A little bit of courage really pays off, in my opinion.

Just a thought: If you really want to stay unique but don’t want half-finished solutions with IKEA hinges, why not invest in completely new fittings and create your own door mechanism? Sliding doors, folding doors, frameless glass design – the possibilities are almost endless.
Of course, the effort is greater, and there is no guarantee the result will fit as perfectly as with the IKEA systems. As with everything: you can always go expensive, but you have to be smart.
I just wonder if this attention to detail with IKEA Pax sometimes goes a bit overboard.
