Hello everyone, I am currently planning a major kitchen renovation and am using Ikea Metod cabinets because they are modular and flexible. My question is, how can these Metod cabinets be easily and neatly adapted to new room conditions or changed dimensions during remodeling? Specifically, I am thinking about shortening cabinet elements, relocating drill holes, or installing additional brackets. Are there any proven methods or tools you would recommend to modify the cabinets without visible damage or loss of stability? I would also like to keep the typical Ikea connection systems and avoid major custom design changes. Thanks for your tips and experiences!

Hey, great question! Metod is also my favorite because you can customize it a lot. For shortening, I prefer to use a fine-tooth saw or a jigsaw with a good wood blade, as this ensures a clean edge. You can make precise holes using a standard cordless drill; try it first on a scrap piece of wood to make sure everything fits. Important: to stabilize after cutting, I always install additional brackets in the inner corners—this way the overall frame doesn’t lose strength.

Oh, and regarding the connection systems: I wouldn’t remove the original connectors, they’re cleverly designed. Just reinforce them with screws alongside, and the structure will hold up well even after adjustments.

Cabinets can be shortened using a jigsaw and re-drilled with standard wood drill bits. Try to reuse connection hardware whenever possible. If stability is compromised, a metal bracket can help.

For modifying Ikea Metod cabinets during renovations, I recommend the following:

- Cutting should be done exclusively with appropriate power tools, such as a plunge saw with a guide rail for clean cuts.
- Drill templates are useful for relocating holes to ensure precision.
- The original connection systems are sturdy enough but should be sensibly reinforced when dimensions are changed, for example with additional brackets or braces.
- It is important to keep load-bearing capacities in mind, as any alteration can negatively affect stability.

Various assembly instructions from Ikea itself also provide guidance on how to adjust individual modules during renovations.

I haven’t been able to achieve very clean cuts with jigsaws, and the veneer often chips. Are there any specific tips to prevent edge splintering when cutting? Perhaps a particular technique or preparation?

I haven’t used plunge saws so far, but that sounds like a good idea. Does it really solve the veneer issue?

To prevent splintering when cutting, it helps to apply adhesive tape or painter’s tape along the cutting line beforehand. This keeps the veneer more stable. A guide rail ensures straight cuts.
