Hello everyone,

I recently got a Billy shelf unit from IKEA with doors, and I’ve noticed that the door hinges are no longer as smooth as they were at first. The doors sometimes stick when opening and closing, which makes handling quite frustrating.

I’m wondering if anyone here in the forum has practical tips on how to make these doors operate smoothly again without having to replace the hinges entirely. Maybe there are useful maintenance tips, lubricants, or tricks that can help keep the mechanism running smoothly in the long term?

I’d appreciate any suggestions, along with brief explanations of why they work.

Thanks in advance!

For BILLY doors, a simple silicone spray on the hinges often helps. Avoid WD-40, as it attracts dirt quickly. Just spray it on, move the hinges well, and you're done.

The BILLY door hinges use a simple metal system. To restore smooth operation, I recommend cleaning them with isopropanol to remove grease and dirt, followed by a light lubrication with dry silicone oil or PTFE spray. Avoid oil-based products, as they attract dust and often worsen the problem by causing stickiness.

This is a good approach; however, I would check whether the sticking is really caused only by dirt or if there might be a mechanical misalignment of the hinges. If the doors are warped or the screws are tightened too much, lubrication alone may not be effective. Has anyone had experience with this?

Thank you for the addition, that’s a good point. I took a closer look at the door a few days ago and the screws seem firmly in place but not stripped. Warping doesn’t seem entirely ruled out – the doors appear slightly misaligned at the bottom. How can you tell for sure if there is a misalignment? Is there any simple way to check this?

The most common method to detect misalignment is to remove the door and inspect the hinges directly. Check the hinges mounted on the wall to see if they are loose or damaged. Also, pay attention to whether the screws have any play in their holes. Then place the door on a flat surface and check if the wood has warped.

If, when closing the door while it is still installed, you notice uneven gaps where light passes through, this is often an indication of misalignment. A small mirror can be helpful, for example, to better inspect the gaps from the side.
