Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my BILLY bookshelf from IKEA: the doors often close quite loudly and almost slam shut, which over time is not only annoying but could also damage the door hinges. Are there any proven methods or accessories that can prevent the BILLY doors from slamming? I have heard about dampers or specific types of hinges, but I am unsure what is suitable for the BILLY bookshelf, or if simple solutions like felt strips might help. Perhaps someone here has experience or can offer tips on how to make the doors close softly and quietly without having to completely modify the unit.

Thank you for your support!

You can install special door dampers from IKEA or a hardware store. These are easy to attach to the hinges and soften the closing impact. Alternatively, self-adhesive felt or rubber strips on the doors or the frame can also help.

For BILLY shelves, soft door dampers designed specifically for lightweight cabinet doors are recommended. These can usually be mounted on the door or the cabinet frame and reduce the closing force.

Another option is magnetic door catches or rubber bumpers that prevent the doors from slamming shut with full force. It is important to consider the door weight and the type of hinges, as some dampers may not be compatible.

Felt strips are a cost-effective option but only reduce noise rather than the impact force. For a long-lasting solution, door dampers or soft-close hinges are technically preferable.

Soft-close hinges are also my recommendation. Replacement parts that fit BILLY are available at IKEA or well-stocked online stores. Installation only requires a screwdriver and a bit of patience.

Alternatively, I have had good experiences with small rubber buffers that you stick to the inner frame. They are inexpensive and quick to install but provide only light cushioning.
