Hello everyone,

I have a question that probably many pet owners with a BILLY shelf from IKEA share: How can I effectively protect my BILLY shelf from scratches caused by cats or dogs? I am mainly looking for a decorative, practical solution that protects the value of the shelf but is not too complicated or does not significantly alter its style.

Maybe someone already has experience or uses special accessories, so-called scratch protection elements, or has made their own custom solutions? It is important to me that the protection covers not only the surface but also the sensitive edges and sides of the shelf, so the pets don’t just target the front.

What would you recommend—ready-made from the market or DIY? And how do adhesive properties or visual changes look? Looking forward to your opinions and tips!

Honestly, if you don’t consistently train your pets, there’s no need for scratch protection on the shelf. Protective products are often just a symptomatic solution that doesn’t change behavior in the long term.

That’s a luxury. I recommend setting clear rules first: scratching only on suitable scratching posts, not on furniture. There are far too many supposed protective solutions that either look cheap or severely limit functionality.

In my case, a sturdy scratching post and lots of training have been more effective than any films or protective strips. How about you—has anyone here had lasting success with any attachments or materials to protect their BILLY shelves?

This perspective isn’t always realistic. Sometimes cats are really difficult to train or react strongly on instinct. Additional scratch protection on furniture can be particularly useful and gentler on the furnishings at popular scratching spots.

Regarding scratch protection for BILLY shelves, from experience I can say that transparent protective films or scratch-resistant plastic sheets, which can be easily fixed with double-sided tape, do have an effect. They are relatively unobtrusive and can be applied to the front edge as well as the sides without ruining the look.

There are also special furniture scratch protection strips available at craft stores or online – flexible and thin plastic profiles that work very well when cats want to sharpen their claws on them.

Of course, this does not completely replace training, but especially if you don’t have space for large scratching posts, such a solution can protect the shelf long-term and reduce hassle.

Protecting furniture from scratches caused by pets, in my view, requires a combination of prevention and protective materials.

There are several practical approaches for the BILLY bookshelf:

1. High scratch-resistant protective films made of polycarbonate or PET, which can be transparently applied to the front surfaces and edges. These materials are thin, almost invisible, and provide effective protection.

2. Plastic edge protectors that can be installed by yourself – these locally increase the durability of the edges, which are especially vulnerable to cats.

3. Alternatively, solvent-free coatings are possible to strengthen the surface, but the compatibility with pets should be verified.

When keeping pets, it is also advisable to place the bookshelf so that it does not become a primary target for the animals, for example, not directly next to window seats or sunlit areas, as cats particularly like to scratch there.

Last but not least, integrating a high-quality scratching post is important to redirect natural scratching behavior. Relying solely on protective measures without considering animal behavior generally results in limited effectiveness.

I can confirm that. I have such films on my BILLY and it works well. Just cut them yourself and attach with double-sided tape.

Furniture scratch protection strips that are flexible and thin

Also helpful. Cost-effective and visually minimal.

For me, that is enough together with a good scratching post.
