emiliano416 Mar 2021 09:17Hello everyone, I would like to discuss a topic that probably concerns many of us who assemble Malm furniture from IKEA at home: How can I prevent damage when putting together Malm furniture?
I’ve noticed that the surfaces and edges of Malm dressers are quite delicate, especially when using tools or moving the parts around. Are there any proven methods you can recommend to avoid scratches, dents, or even edge damage permanently? I’m interested in tips for both preparing the workspace and during the actual assembly, as well as advice on tools or materials that work well. Thanks in advance for your responses!

The most important factor to avoid damage to Malm furniture is a clean and soft work surface. Ideally, use a blanket or a large foam mat to lay out all parts. This protects the finish and edges from scratches caused by hard surfaces.
Another key point is careful handling of screwdrivers, preferably using bits that fit the screws exactly. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the screws or the wood.
Also, follow the assembly instructions step by step and avoid overtightening the screws. A torque wrench or simply controlled tightening without over-torquing can prevent damage to particleboard. Overall, precision and care during assembly are essential.

Landontau16 Mar 2021 11:22I would like to add my experiences and present them in an organized way, as many small details can cause damage during the Malm assembly.
1. Preparation: Besides a soft surface, I recommend sorting and laying out the parts according to the instructions. A careful overview prevents frantic searching and unnecessary movement, which can lead to scratches.
2. Tools: Always use the correct Phillips or Allen key for the screws. An affordable cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is ideal to avoid over-tightening screws.
3. Careful handling: Once the boards fit together, they should not be rubbed against each other. I like to place felt pads underneath or put a soft blanket between them.
4. Inspection: After each major step, I check the stability and ensure no screws are missing—this helps avoid disassembly, which often causes surface damage.
In summary: With patience, the right tools, and a clean workspace, damage can be significantly reduced.

Besides protecting the work surface, are there any recommendations for handling the boards carefully during assembly to avoid damaging the sensitive edges? I often feel that the edges are especially prone to dents and damage when they bump against each other.

Sinan-meo16 Mar 2021 13:54That is a very good question, as the edges are indeed the most critical points on Malm furniture. My advice:
1. Use edge protection, such as wide adhesive tapes or felt strips, applied to the edges beforehand. These prevent direct impacts and scratches.
2. Avoid stacking or sliding the panels directly on top of each other without protection. If the panels must come into contact, always place something soft between them.
3. When fitting the connectors, do not force the parts together, but align them carefully and precisely.
These measures have helped me several times to avoid typical damage.
