Hello everyone,

I’m considering using my KALLAX shelf from Ikea on my balcony, but the balcony is not fully covered, and I’m concerned about exposure to the weather. My specific question: Has anyone had experience using a KALLAX shelf outdoors when it was protected from rain and moisture by a balcony tarp or similar covering?

I imagine using the shelf as outdoor storage or a surface if it is reasonably protected by the tarp. I understand that KALLAX is originally designed for indoor use, but maybe the tarp provides enough protection.

I’m interested in the following points:
- How well does the balcony tarp keep moisture away from the KALLAX in practice?
- Are there issues with mold or material deformation despite the tarp protection?
- Any tips for handling this or alternatives if it doesn’t work out?

Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

The shelf will not hold up well outdoors over time. The balcony tarp only provides superficial protection; moisture will inevitably get in. The material will swell quickly, as you will notice.

I think it’s worth a try! Maybe not forever, but with the right tarp and a bit of care, you can definitely use your KALLAX outside for a while 🙂! I once had a similar shelf on my balcony for a summer and it worked great—sure, it wasn’t completely dry, but there was no major damage.

If you need the storage space, give it a go and share your experience here; it will surely encourage others to try something new!

When using KALLAX shelving units outdoors with a balcony tarp, it should be noted that the base materials (particleboard/chipboard panels) are sensitive to moisture. Balcony tarps usually do not provide a fully airtight and waterproof barrier but offer only some protection against rain, which can lead to condensation.

This may result in warping, swelling of the panels, and mold. The only effective prevention is adequate ventilation to avoid moisture buildup.

My advice: If you still choose to use them outdoors, regular inspection and maintenance are necessary, such as wiping down surfaces and occasional airing out. Alternatively, specially designed outdoor shelves made of plastic or metal are better suited.

I once tried something like that – using a KALLAX outdoors is kind of like having a pet: you have to take care of it constantly, and it doesn’t like getting wet 😉

A balcony tarp can help, but I’d make sure that not only does rain stay out, but also that moisture doesn’t get trapped inside. Otherwise, the shelves start to swell, which is annoying.

I treated my shelf mechanically with a water-repellent spray and wiped it down from time to time. That worked fine for one season. If you take it easy and don’t put too much heavy stuff on it, you can give it a go with a bit of humor! 🙂
