Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe, but I am quite unhappy with the alignment of the doors. They sag slightly and don’t close flush, which is really annoying in everyday use. My question is quite specific: How do you properly adjust IKEA BRIMNES doors so they don’t sag but are perfectly aligned and close properly? I am aware that IKEA usually provides adjustment screws on the hinges, but I would like to understand in more detail what the best practices are, which mistakes to avoid, and whether there are any tips that are not immediately obvious. Specifically, I want to know if the doors can be adjusted in multiple dimensions and how to handle the screws best without damaging the material or permanently misaligning the door. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello fabla, the issue with sagging doors on IKEA BRIMNES is quite common and can be easily fixed with careful adjustment. Basically, you can adjust the doors in three directions: sideways, vertically, and in depth.

- First, you should carefully check whether the door is hitting the hinge or the cabinet frame. For sideways adjustment, there is usually a screw on the hinges, often the middle one, with which you can move the door left or right. This is how you align the door so it sits flush with the cabinet front.

- Vertical adjustment is done by turning the screws that attach the hinge to the cabinet body up or down. This screw prevents the door from sagging or hanging too low. A bit of finesse is needed here, as the door can twist if adjusted too much.

- Depth adjustment (how close or far the door sits from the cabinet body) is made with another screw on the hinge. This prevents the door from rubbing on the frame or sticking out too far.

It is important to adjust the screws in small increments and check the door in between. Over-tightening can cause misalignment. Loose or overly tight screws can also contribute to sagging.

At least with BRIMNES, you can tell the hinges are somewhat delicate, so be gentle when tightening and avoid using excessive force. I recommend using a screwdriver that fits the screws well to prevent slipping or scratching.

One more question: Have you loosened and re-adjusted all the door hinges, or have you only adjusted individual screws? This can affect the overall alignment.

Hello fabla, I would like to provide a brief, step-by-step guide on how to properly align the IKEA BRIMNES doors so they don’t sag:

1. Check the doors: Open the door and identify where it sags or doesn’t close flush.

2. Lateral adjustment: Use the side screw on the hinge to adjust the door to the right or left. Small turns make a difference here.

3. Vertical adjustment: Let the door hang and carefully loosen the screws attaching the hinge to the cabinet body (usually two screws). Then you can move the door slightly up or down. Afterward, tighten the screws again.

4. Depth adjustment: Use the screw on the hinge to adjust the door’s depth so it sits flush with the cabinet frame and doesn’t stick.

5. Check: After each adjustment, view the door from the front and side, and open and close it several times. This way you can quickly see if further adjustments are needed.

Common mistakes with these cabinets are:
- Tightening the screws too much before the door is properly positioned
- Adjusting the wrong screw, which causes misalignment
- Warping the door by reattaching or holding it too hastily during installation

My tip: adjust only one screw at a time, then test again—don’t adjust all screws at once. If this doesn’t help, it can also be useful to completely loosen the hinges, take the doors off, and rehang them.

This way you can get the BRIMNES doors into the correct position without sagging or sticking.

Exactly! I also first installed my BRIMNES door a bit crooked and uneven. You really underestimate how precisely the hinge can be adjusted. Imagine the door as a small work of art that wants to fit perfectly into the frame.

- Slide it sideways to get the gaps right
- Adjust the height (you can easily balance it by placing a ruler or your hand underneath)
- And set the depth so the door doesn’t look too thick at the front or fit too loosely.

That’s really invaluable advice – I ignored it at first and ended up frustrated for a while until I figured out the right order.

Oh, and if you get stuck, just take a deep breath. The door will wait patiently 😉 Good luck!
