ᐅ How can I build a rolling storage unit under my desk using Ikea BESTA?

Hello everyone, I want to convert my Ikea Besta cabinet into a mobile storage unit on casters to fit under my desk, and I have a few specific questions. I’m particularly interested in the best way to mount the BESTA on casters so that it remains stable and can be easily rolled under the desk without the wheels being too wobbly or the storage losing stability. I’m considering larger furniture casters that can support a good load capacity and roll as quietly as possible. I would also like to know if I need to disassemble or modify the BESTA beforehand – for example, removing shelves or adding reinforcements. It’s important to me that the modification is as simple as possible and doesn’t require major changes to the furniture’s structure, so I can easily revert to the standard BESTA setup if needed. Has anyone had experience with this kind of DIY caster conversion? Are there common mistakes to watch out for? I’m looking forward to your tips and instructions!

Hello Isakpeo,

Plywood is definitely a very good choice for a stable subfloor structure, as it is significantly more load-bearing than regular MDF and less prone to warping. For the thickness, I would suggest 10 mm (0.4 inches) to ensure it is both stable and not too high. Pre-drilling is highly recommended so you can precisely place the screws without causing any cracks. Make sure to choose screws that are not too long to avoid them poking through the other side and possibly damaging the interior components.

A commonly used method is also to mount the casters on small wooden battens that are screwed to the plywood subfloor. This way, you distribute the load even better. For drilling, I recommend carefully marking the screw positions beforehand and using a small drill bit to make pilot holes. This ensures everything fits perfectly, and the Besta remains stable.

If you like, I can send you a rough sketch or dimensions that worked well for my project.

Thank you, Deandre, for the detailed tips. A sketch would be really helpful to better visualize the position of the strips and rollers. I hadn’t considered the idea of using short screws either. I assume the screws should still be installed in a way that the rollers are absolutely secure? Is it even possible to mount the rollers at a minimal maximum distance so that the BESTA doesn’t tip over, but without having to use long strips? I don’t have much space on the subfloor, so a compact installation would be ideal.

I understand how important the space is to you! When converting to a rolling system, the rule is: the closer you attach the wheels to the corners, the more stable the cabinet will be, but of course, space is limited. Small strips are often enough; what matters most is that the wheels are secured with enough screws so they don’t wobble. Trust that a good fit and precise drilling really make a big difference!

I was worried myself that the project might be too complicated, but it was definitely worth it. If you want, you could also try a step-by-step approach: first reinforce minimally and attach the wheels, then test if it’s stable enough for you. Adjustments can always be made afterward.

Good luck! And always remember: a stable cabinet makes working much more comfortable.

Just a quick note: Always pre-drill screws to prevent splitting. Try to install rollers near the corners. Small wooden strips can help when working with thin subflooring.

I’m considering whether to use plywood instead of MDF specifically for reinforcing the subfloor, since plywood is much stronger and more durable.

Plywood is great! 💪 I used it as well and am very satisfied. It holds firmly and the casters are stable. And of course, pre-drilling is essential; otherwise, you risk splitting or cracking.

Another tip: If you like, you can cut the plywood sheet before screwing it in so it’s slightly smaller than the BESTA subfloor instead of flush. This helps avoid stress during removal or any future modifications.

Good luck, it’s going to be awesome! 🔥

Hi Isakpeo, I want to encourage you. I also felt afraid of damaging the BESTA. But with careful pre-drilling and accurate measuring, everything worked out great. For me, it was important to use casters with a locking brake, as this provides stability when working at the desk. There were moments when I felt unsure, but simply taking it step by step and making adjustments really helps. If you ever feel overwhelmed, you’ll find many friendly people here ready to assist you. Take your time with the project. I wish you lots of success and patience!
