ᐅ The Malm bed only squeaks when turning – what could be the cause?

I have a Malm bed from IKEA that only makes a squeaking noise when I turn over in bed. It doesn’t happen when lying down or getting up, but specifically when I’m moving around in bed. The squeaking sounds like a light rubbing or scraping and is quite annoying. Does anyone know possible reasons why the Malm bed might squeak exactly when turning? There could be friction or loose parts, but where should I start checking first without taking everything apart? Are there any common problem areas or known weak points that could explain the noise?

Thanks in advance for all the helpful suggestions!

Today, I checked all the visible screws on the frame and tightened them slightly, but I couldn’t detect any rattling. The squeaking still occurs during twisting movements.

I’m wondering if it might also be caused by the slatted bed base, which applies more pressure in one direction when turning...

What exactly do you mean by “felt pads”? Could you describe them in more detail or recommend where I should start looking? Are there any experiences regarding the best way to dampen the contact between the slatted bed base and the bed frame?

One more idea: Could the mattress, due to its surface or firmness level, amplify the squeaking noise during turning, or is that unlikely?

Felt pads are self-adhesive pieces of felt used to reduce friction and noise between wooden or metal parts. They are applied to contact surfaces where wood meets wood or wood meets metal.

For example, between a slatted frame and the bed frame at the support points. The pads absorb movement and minimize mechanical noises caused by friction.

Usage and procurement:

- You can buy felt pads at hardware stores, usually in the furniture section.
- They are affordable and easy to install.
- Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of grease before attaching the pad.

Regarding the mattress’s effect: mattresses can slightly dampen noise, but most squeaking comes from the bed’s construction itself. The firmness or material of the mattress plays a minor role in this.
