Hello everyone, I am about to assemble an IKEA Hemnes bedroom set and want to be as well-prepared as possible. Therefore, my question is: Which tools are absolutely essential to complete the assembly efficiently and without major issues? I do have a small toolbox, but I am unsure if that will be enough or if I should get some specific equipment. I am especially interested in tools beyond the usual ones, so not just screwdrivers and a hammer, but also any special aids that noticeably make the assembly easier. If anyone has experience with Hemnes – which tools are really necessary, which can be safely skipped, and are there any handling tips that make the process much smoother? Thanks in advance for your input.

Hello ben-lu, regarding your question about the essential tools for assembling the IKEA HEMNES: basically, you first need some standard tools, but having certain sizes and qualities can significantly ease the assembly process. My advice would be to carefully prepare the following tools:

- Phillips screwdriver (PH2), preferably with an ergonomic handle for prolonged screwing
- Cordless drill with adjustable torque, if available – it saves a lot of time and protects the screws
- Spirit level to ensure the furniture is perfectly level (especially important for cabinets)
- Rubber mallet or hammer with a wooden block to protect surfaces when driving in dowels
- Tape measure to measure the assembly area and position components accurately

A small multimeter or similar tool is not necessary, as no electrical installation is involved. Additionally, you should follow the assembly instructions very carefully and sort the fittings beforehand. One detail that is often overlooked: the screws sometimes need to be inserted depending on the side or have specific torque requirements, especially for connecting side panels and back panels. If you like, I can also give you tips on handling individual screw connections effectively. It’s important to me that you know which tools really make a difference and which ones are just unnecessary bulk.

I agree with that. Additionally, I would recommend having a small flathead screwdriver, as some connections in IKEA furniture are secured with those. Also, an Allen key set is usually included in the package, but it’s better to have your own set on hand in case you need replacements or if the provided keys are uncomfortable to use.

Very important: work on a clean and level surface to make assembly much easier and to prevent damage to the furniture parts. If you want to protect your floors or walls, I also suggest laying down a felt mat or cardboard.

In my opinion, a tape measure is essential, especially if you want to position the furniture accurately later. If you plan to connect several pieces together, a clamp can be very helpful to hold the parts in place. These are inexpensive and save a lot of hassle during alignment and screwing.

So, to summarize: a good Phillips screwdriver, a small Allen key set, tape measure, hammer or rubber mallet, and if possible, a cordless drill are the most important tools for me when assembling the HEMNES.

It’s interesting how tools are recommended here. My question is: How reliable is it that a cordless drill/driver is always the best choice? Considering that IKEA screws are often made of soft material, there is a risk of over-tightening and damaging the material. You would need a good feel for torque control.

Furthermore, I believe that with furniture like HEMNES, a lot of importance is placed on precise assembly, especially because of the visible wood grain and the quality of the finish. Using unconventional tools alone risks uneven drilling or scratches.

In summary, I would be cautious about using a cordless drill/driver unless you know exactly how to adjust the torque settings and handle the screws properly. Are there any experiences that confirm whether a cordless drill/driver is really faster and safer, or if a traditional screwdriver might be a better choice?

Absolutely, that is a very important point. At first, I was hesitant to assemble my first HEMNES bed using a cordless drill because I was worried about over-tightening. In the end, I set the torque low and mostly finished by hand, which was a good compromise.

I also found it helpful to use a small piece of soft felt padding placed under the furniture parts to protect the wood from scratches and pressure marks.

What helped me the most was patience and the willingness to follow the assembly steps exactly in the correct order – this prevents stress on the material and makes screwing easier, whether using a screwdriver or a cordless drill.

Are there any other issues you’re having with assembly that we can help with?
