Good morning everyone, I wanted to ask how you clean your Billy shelves without damaging the surface. I’ve noticed that aggressive cleaning products or overly damp cloths can slightly affect the white coated surface or leave dull spots. It would be great if anyone has experience or tips on how to clean the shelves gently and which products really work to keep the material looking good for a long time. So far, I usually just use a damp microfiber cloth, but for tougher stains, I’d like to know what you recommend. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hello, I simply use a slightly damp microfiber cloth for my BILLY shelves, and for tougher dirt, a few drops of dish soap in the water. Important: Do not wipe too wet, as the wood cannot tolerate standing moisture.

For cleaning BILLY shelves, I recommend using a soft microfiber cloth without harsh cleaning agents. The surface is melamine-coated, so mild cleaners that do not contain alcohol or solvents can be used. Stubborn stains can be removed with a slightly damp cloth and a drop of mild dish soap. After cleaning, the surface should be wiped dry quickly to prevent moisture damage. Please avoid abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as they can scratch the coating.

That’s amazing how sensitive the BILLY surface can be! 🙂 I’ve found that a mix of lukewarm water and a little lemon works great as a natural cleaning solution. Sometimes I’ve also successfully used a very mild vinegar-water solution, but only sparingly. Make sure not to use too much liquid and always wipe dry afterwards. This way, the shelf stays clean and looks like new! Give it a try, you can do it! 😉

I would be cautious with that. Citric acid can gradually damage or discolor some melamine-coated surfaces over time. I recommend using neutral cleaners without acids or alcohols. Have you checked this? It’s safer to stick with mild dish soap rather than home remedies that might cause harm. Often, it’s the small details that determine the lifespan of the surface.

Thanks for the tip! That actually helps me a lot because I was about to experiment with lemon juice, but I also had concerns that it might damage the surface in the long term.

Can anyone else say whether common household glass cleaners or all-purpose cleaners are advisable or should be avoided? I suspect that the solvent formulations in them might be too harsh, but I don’t want to be sure without hearing well-informed opinions.
