Hello everyone, I recently got an IKEA Brimnes bed with built-in drawers, and I’ve noticed that these drawers are quite difficult to open and close. Especially when they are fully loaded, it seems to take quite a bit of effort. I’m interested to hear if you have any experience or tips on how to make the Brimnes drawers operate more smoothly and easily. Are there any specific maintenance recommendations or perhaps accessories that can improve the drawer slides or locking system? I would appreciate any advice that could make daily use of this piece of furniture easier!
That is a very good question. The Brimnes drawers use relatively simple roller or sliding rails that are not designed for extremely heavy loads. Sometimes the material is a bit rough at the edges or the fittings are designed with tight tolerances, which increases resistance, especially when everything is brand new.
Therefore, I recommend the following:
- Open and close the drawers multiple times over a few days to gradually break in the mechanism.
- Check whether the drawers are installed perfectly straight; sometimes a small alignment adjustment helps.
- If possible, reduce the load in the more critical areas.
The resistance will usually decrease noticeably through maintenance and regular use – if not, there might be an installation error.

Have you ever experienced that the drawer joints or slides are specifically the problem due to their design?I think so, at least in the beginning. IKEA’s design is very functional, but sometimes there are still little flaws. Since the furniture is designed for a mass market, not everything can be perfect. Still, I believe with the right maintenance tips and a bit of patience, it works out great! So just keep at it—it will surely work for you too! 🙂
