Hello everyone, I want to create additional storage space under my staircase and have been considering an Ikea Besta system because it is modular and flexible. My staircase is wooden with quite a steep slope. The height under the stairs varies from about 70 cm (28 inches) at the lowest point to 120 cm (47 inches) at the highest point, with a depth of around 90 cm (35 inches).

My question is: What is the best and most effective way to adapt and install the Ikea Besta system to this stair slope so that it is stable, easily accessible, and makes the most efficient use of the space under the stairs? I am especially interested to know whether I should cut the Besta units to fit, whether additional reinforcements are worthwhile, or if a combination of drawers and doors is recommended. Does anyone have experience or tips on what I should definitely pay attention to? I want to avoid mistakes and minimize the need for rework.

It is best to measure the height and depth accurately and choose the BESTA components that fit best. Cutting is often necessary. Drawers are practical for easy access, doors for clean storage. Stability is achieved with suitable angle brackets or wall mounts.

Hello tumau, your plan to use the storage space under the stairs is very practical, as this area often remains unused. The Ikea BESTA system is modular and offers a variety of configurations. For the angled surface, it is advisable to first create an accurate template of the slope. This will help you determine which parts may need to be adjusted. It is common to cut the top of the cabinets to fit the slope or to install an additional wooden batten as a stopping edge.

Reinforcements are recommended, especially if you plan to store heavy items. Wall fixings with appropriate anchors greatly increase stability and prevent the units from tipping over.

Drawers offer the advantage of easy access, making them ideal for smaller items. Doors, on the other hand, protect against dust and conceal larger objects. Often, a combination of both is the best solution.

Also, make sure to allow enough ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.

For optimal integration of Ikea BESTA units under a staircase, I recommend the following approach: create a precise cutting plan to adjust for the slope of the stairs. If you do not have experience with tools, it is better to have cutting work done by a professional retailer or workshop.

Reinforcements are definitely advisable, especially for heavier loads. Use angle brackets and secure wall fastenings. Pay attention to stability at corner joints.

When choosing between doors and drawers, keep in mind: drawers maximize accessibility, while doors provide a neater appearance. A combination of both is functional.

Finally, check the installation height and consider accessibility to ensure comfortable use.

Thank you for the initial responses. A follow-up question for Grace: What is the best way to create a template for the slope? I don’t have professional carpentry experience but want to work as precisely as possible to avoid rework. Are there any simple methods or tools you would recommend?

What is the best way to create a template for an angled cut?

Hello tumau, a simple method is to trace the angle using thin cardboard or stiff craft paper. You can place the cardboard along the bottom and top edges of the angled surface and mark the outline with a pencil. Then, cut out the template and test it directly against the staircase. If it fits, you can use it as a guide for your cutting.

Alternatively, a flexible curve ruler can be useful, especially if the angle is irregular. Consider which option suits you best.
