Hello everyone,

I have been dealing with a problem for some time now: a large amount of dust collects behind my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA. The unit is placed directly against the wall, but because of the open compartments, dust travels back there, making me feel like I never fully clean behind it during each cleaning session.

I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences and how you protect yourself from the dust buildup behind the KALLAX? Are there practical solutions to permanently control the dust issue – perhaps special covers, back panels, or other clever ideas?

I look forward to your tips and experiences on how you handle this common problem!

I simply attached thin plastic sheets behind my KALLAX. This keeps the dust out while still allowing the shelf to be used effectively.

Dust collectors are open, so that will be difficult. Simply wipe more often or use a piece of foam rubber as a spacer. This reduces airflow behind and therefore less dust.

I recommend attaching a thin wooden panel to the back of the shelving unit. This will stabilize the shelf and help keep dust out.

Why not simply move the KALLAX a little away from the wall? This makes cleaning easier, and you can better mop behind it.

That's already a good tip! I think sometimes a small trick like this helps, as it gives dust less opportunity to settle thickly at the back ;-)

By the way, I hung some nice curtains on my shelf – it looks good and keeps the dust away. All without an additional back panel. 🙂
