Hello everyone,
I have a question that’s been bothering me lately: How can I permanently fix the squeaking in Ikea Metod drawers?
I’m using the Metod kitchen system with the typical drawer slides, and although I rarely open the drawers, they start to squeak over time. The noise is quite annoying, and I would like to know if there is a solution that really lasts.
So far, I have only tried surface treatments with silicone spray or lubricant, but these have only helped temporarily. I suspect the issue might be with the rails or the rollers, but I’m not sure.
Is there anyone familiar with the construction of Metod drawers who can offer tips on how to permanently eliminate the squeaking? Maybe advice on which lubricant or method has proven to be especially effective?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Datunau,
I’d be happy to provide you with a simple step-by-step guide on how to permanently eliminate squeaking in Ikea Metod drawers:
1. Remove the drawer completely: Carefully pull the drawer out until it comes fully off the track. Sometimes there are small levers on the sides that need to be pressed.
2. Cleaning: Inspect the runners and rollers for dust, dirt, or small debris. Thoroughly clean everything with a lint-free cloth and some alcohol or glass cleaner.
3. Lubrication: Use a high-quality PTFE spray (Teflon spray) or silicone spray, specially designed for plastic and metal parts. Warning: Do not use oil, as it attracts dust and can increase squeaking later.
4. Application: Apply the spray thinly and evenly to the rollers and tracks. Remove any excess spray with a cloth.
5. Reassemble and test: Put the drawer back in place, open and close it several times, and check if the squeaking is gone.
Common mistakes are using too much lubricant or the wrong products, which only help temporarily and attract dirt.
Summary: Cleaning + applying a thin layer of high-quality PTFE or silicone spray = long-lasting effect.
If you already have experience with this method, feel free to share your results.

Typical mistakes are using too much lubricant or the wrong products that only provide short-term relief and attract dirt.I fully agree with this and would like to add: With Ikea Metod drawers, it is very important to pay close attention to the exact positioning of the rails. I have found that the original metal guides and plastic rollers work best for quiet operation when treated with PTFE-sealed spray.
Some users opt for cheap WD-40 variants, which may feel effective temporarily but can cause varnishing over time and lead to squeaking again.
It is also important to carefully inspect the rollers. Small cracks in the plastic can cause noise, and in such cases, replacement is the only solution.
I recommend:
- Thoroughly clean rails and rollers (using alcohol or spirits)
- Check rollers for damage
- Apply a thin layer of PTFE spray on rollers and rails
- Avoid oils or grease-based products
If you are interested: The drawers can be completely disassembled, but this is often unnecessary – proper cleaning and lubrication usually suffice.
How precise are your rails and rollers aligned? Do you notice traces of dust, dirt, or a dull, rough surface?

In case you're interested: The drawers can be completely disassembled, but that's often not necessary – proper cleaning and lubrication usually suffice. Thanks for the detailed information; it confirms much of what I suspected.
The slides don’t look damaged on my end, but I can feel a slightly rough surface. The drawers generally operate quite smoothly, but when they start squeaking, it becomes very annoying.
I haven’t tried taking the drawers apart yet, as I’m afraid I might not be able to reassemble them correctly.
What do you think: Can these minor rough spots on the metal surfaces be smoothed out with polishing? Or is cleaning and lubrication really enough to fully solve this problem?
I want to avoid having to reorder and replace the slides, as that would be an unnecessary expense.
Also: PTFE spray was recommended – is there anything specific I should look out for? For example, particular brands or ingredients that are “not suitable”? Thanks in advance for any further tips!

What do you think: Can these fine roughnesses on the metal surfaces be smoothed out by polishing? Or is cleaning and lubricating really sufficient to completely solve this problem?Hello,
I recommend polishing the metal rails only in exceptional cases because Ikea Metod usually uses cold-rolled steel profiles with a protective coating. Polishing can damage this protective layer and lead to faster corrosion, which would worsen the problem.
In most cases, thorough cleaning and a thin layer of PTFE or silicone spray are completely sufficient. These lubricants effectively reduce friction and prevent squeaking without altering the surface.
Regarding PTFE spray:
- It is important that the spray does not become sticky or oily, as this would attract dust.
- Products specially designed for both plastic and metal are ideal.
- Cheap products often contain solvents that can damage plastic components.
If you want to be on the safe side, I recommend a PTFE spray specifically labeled “for drawers” or “for plastic parts.”
Summary:
- Polishing is usually unnecessary and can damage the surface
- Cleaning plus the right lubricant is the best approach
If the issue persists stubbornly, replacing the running rails may be an option.
