Hello everyone, I’m looking for a good solution to secure my IKEA Billy shelves without drilling holes into the wall. The problem is, I’m renting and not allowed to make any holes, so I want to safely fix the shelves to the wall without damaging it. Does anyone know practical methods or alternatives to stabilize the Billy shelves? It’s important to me that the fixing method prevents the shelves from tipping over under normal book loads. Thanks for your ideas and experiences!

Regarding the question of mounting BILLY shelves without drilling, there are several practical options. For example, tension straps with wall anchors that do not require drilling are available; these are stretched between two opposite furniture pieces to provide stability. Alternatively, clamp rails or screw-free adhesive profiles can be used, which offer a decent holding force. However, with these options, it is important to always consider the maximum load, as safety cannot be guaranteed with heavy books.

Hello Hugo51, based on my own experience with rental apartments, I can recommend considering the use of anti-tip restraints that are attached with adhesive pads or strong tape on the back of the shelf and the wall. While these don’t hold as securely as wall anchors, they provide a good basic protection against tipping over. In terms of load, you should avoid placing heavy or unevenly distributed items on the shelf. If you like, I can also give you some tips on how to properly apply these adhesive pads to maximize their hold.

I would like to add that it is very important to clean and degrease the wall surface before applying the adhesive pads. Only then can the pads achieve their full adhesive strength. The temperature during installation should also be considered, as adhesive tapes adhere less effectively in very cold or humid conditions.

Hi Hugo51 🙂 So, I got really creative with my project: I installed small shelf supports using what I call 'door stops,' those square metal brackets that you wedge between the shelf and the floor. They stabilize the shelf and prevent it from tipping forward without the need for drilling. They’re certainly not meant for very heavy loads, but they work great for regular books! And you can easily remove them again, which is a plus for landlords, of course ;-).

Hello Hugo51,

to approach your question more technically: The main challenge with non-drill mounting of BILLY shelves is anchoring against tipping forces, which occur especially with heavy loads. There are several broadly applicable methods, which I would like to break down somewhat systematically here:

1. Clamping systems: Some specialized manufacturers offer clamping rails that are installed between floor and ceiling and secure the shelf like a wedge. The hold is achieved through pressure, not drill holes.

2. Adhesive methods: High-strength double-sided tapes (such as 3M VHB) or construction adhesives can be applied between the back of the shelf and the wall. However, a clean wall surface and proper installation are essential, otherwise nothing will hold.

3. Weighting: The shelf can also be stabilized by adding extra weight at the bottom, for example with heavy decorative panels or floor-anchored pushpins.

4. Connecting to furniture: It is often recommended to screw together several BILLY shelves into one module to reduce the risk of tipping, which without wall drilling is only effective in combination with the above methods.

I would like to know if you can describe the condition of your wall (wallpaper, plaster, texture)? This helps to better assess the durability of adhesive solutions.
