Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my Ikea Hemnes sideboard and am wondering which tools are truly useful for a project like this.

The piece of furniture will essentially be altered in its structure and modified in some areas, for example, new holes for handles or possibly short cuts on the sides or the back panel. I want to do this as cleanly as possible, without damaging the wood or creating rough edges.

I am interested in practical experiences regarding which tools have proven effective – for example, for drilling, screwing, but also for fine work like sanding or deburring.

Does anyone have recommendations on which power tools and hand tools are especially suitable for modifying the HEMNES? Tips on handling or suggestions for tools better borrowed than bought are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Bauemil10, your question is very well formulated and shows that you have already spent some time on the project. For modifying an Ikea HEMNES, I can recommend some tools from my own experience that will make the work much easier.

- Cordless screwdriver: Essential, especially for quickly removing or installing connection screws. It is important to have a model with adjustable torque settings to avoid damaging the material.
- Drill or cordless drill with drilling function: For new holes, e.g., for handles, precise small-diameter drill bits are important. I like to use a drill press to ensure straight holes.
- Wood router or precision router: If you want to cut wood or cleanly deburr edges, a small router is very helpful.
- Sandpaper or orbital sander: For fine sanding work on edges and surfaces.

The most important thing is to work slowly and carefully, especially with the thinner veneer layers in the HEMNES wood. If you don’t have much experience, you can also rent certain power tools, which saves costs and provides professional quality.

If you have any further questions about specific work steps, feel free to ask!

Cordless screwdrivers and sharp drill bits are essential. A drill stand helps to drill straight. Don’t forget sandpaper for smoothing.

Hello Bauemil10,

to give a well-founded answer regarding the choice of tools for the HEMNES renovation, it’s important to know some details about the planned project: Are you using solid wood for the HEMNES or mainly veneered panels? Are you planning larger cuts, or will it stay with smaller modifications such as drilling?

For drilling, I usually use a cordless drill. Additionally, I find a depth-stop drill bit or wood drill bits with a centering tip very useful to ensure precise holes and prevent surface splintering. A drill press can help if you work a lot with perfectly vertical holes.

For cutting solid parts or back panels, I use a circular saw with a guide rail or a plunge saw. It is always important to deburr the cut edge immediately – I do this by sanding with fine sandpaper from 120 to 180 grit.

If you have edge routing work, a small router with edge bits is very helpful. This gives a professional finish and prevents splintering.

In general, you should pay attention to good dust extraction because fine dust and wood chips occur during woodworking.

Can you provide a bit more information about your renovation? What exactly are you planning to do?

Could you share more details about your renovation? What exact work is planned?

Good question, thanks. The plan is to install new handles on the dresser, which means drilling new holes for the screws. Additionally, I want to reduce the width of the back panel since the furniture will fit into a niche, so cutting and sanding will be necessary. The front and main parts will mostly remain unchanged. The sides and front are solid wood, while the back panel is a thin MDF board.

My main focus is on precise drilling and clean cut edges. I currently don’t have a drill press, so I’m unsure whether to rely on a handheld drill or something else.

If anyone has specific tips for achieving clean work when drilling holes for the handles, that would be great.

Summary of your project Bauemil10:

- A drill press is ideal for drilling the handle holes, as it stabilizes the hole positioning and prevents the drill bit from slipping. Alternatively, a drilling jig can help ensure the holes are evenly spaced and precise.
- It is best to use sharp Forstner bits or countersink bits with the correct diameter for the handle screws. These bits produce clean, tear-free holes.
- For cutting the back panel, a fine-toothed jigsaw or a plunge saw with a guide rail is suitable. Pay attention to the cutting speed to minimize splintering.
- Use sandpaper with a grit of 120 to 180 for finishing the cut edges.

These tools provide a solid foundation for high-quality, clean workmanship without unnecessary stress on the material.

With careful use, expensive professional tools are not necessarily required, but they do allow for better results.
