Dohermann19 Jun 2020 08:37Hello everyone, I have a question that I would appreciate some detailed feedback on: How can I stabilize IKEA Billy bookcases on carpeted floors in the most secure and steady way?
My problem is that the carpet, which is quite thick and soft, causes the shelves to tip or wobble easily, especially when loaded or when using drawers. The shelves themselves aren’t very heavy, but the combination with a soft surface seems to significantly reduce stability.
I would like to know what solutions exist to secure or level the shelves on such floor coverings so they stand firmly without too much movement. Are there any proven tricks, like additional base plates, special feet, or other mounting options?
It would also be helpful to hear from people who have successfully implemented this to avoid common mistakes.
Thanks for any tips and experiences!

Hello Dohermann! It’s great that you’re looking into this topic so thoroughly! 🙂
I had the same issue myself with a Billy shelf on carpet, and what really helped me was putting small non-slip felt pads under each leg of the shelf – this not only reduced the wobbling but also prevented the shelf from sliding!
Additionally, I placed thin wooden boards underneath to compress the carpet slightly. Now the shelf stands rock solid!
Give this a try, and don’t get discouraged—you can do it! Good luck!!!

Hello Dohermann, your concern is quite complex because carpeted floors pose challenges regarding furniture stability. It is important first to know the type and thickness of the carpet precisely, as different materials compress to varying degrees.
As a technical approach, I recommend the following steps: first, use a spirit level to check how uneven the floor really is, since even a slight slope or irregularity can further affect stability.
One option is to insert firm underlays made of plywood or MDF boards, which compress the carpet fibers and create a more stable base. These can be placed directly under the shelf feet.
Furthermore, the use of adjustable furniture feet is advisable; although not standard for IKEA Billy shelves, they are available at hardware stores. These allow minimal height adjustment to compensate for unevenness.
Special attention should be paid to securing the shelf to the wall, especially with taller units or loads on the shelves, as there is a risk of tipping. I recommend firmly anchored angle brackets with suitable wall plugs.
I would be interested to know the exact thickness of your carpet and whether it has an additional underlay. That could influence the choice of the best solution.

I’m curious about the exact thickness of your carpet, and whether it has an additional underlay?Good question, Surela. The carpet is a velour type with a pile height of about 12 mm (0.5 inches), plus an underlay made of foam insulation approximately 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick.
I suspect that this combination of a soft surface and extra underlay is making the problem worse. The shelf is placed against a relatively smooth wall, into which I can also insert wall plugs.
Your idea about wooden boards sounds interesting, but how thick should the board be at minimum to support the weight and load? Also, should I place the wooden board directly on the carpet, or does it need to be on the subfloor underneath?
Hello Dohermann,
For your situation, I recommend using a plywood board at least 10mm (0.4 inches) thick to ensure sufficient stability and even pressure distribution on the soft subfloor. The board should be larger than the footprint of the shelf so that the load is spread over a wider area.
Place the wooden board directly on the carpet and the underlay. This will compress the fibers, prevent the feet from sinking in, and reduce the tendency to tip.
It is also important to smooth or sand the edges of the board to avoid damage to the carpet and the shelf legs.
Additionally, it is advisable to secure the shelves to the wall, preferably with strong heavy-duty anchors and appropriate brackets. Especially with tall shelves, this provides the most important safety.
Keep in mind that the carpet floor still has some cushioning effect, which you cannot completely eliminate. Regular checks of the stability, especially after load changes, are recommended.

small non-slip felt pads under each shelf legI just wanted to add that while felt pads on carpet can sometimes provide stability, they often have the opposite effect by making the shelf more movable on a soft surface.
Personally, I would rather avoid them and instead use a rigid base as recommended here. If you want to try felt pads, make sure to attach them very securely and check the result carefully.
There are also special anti-slip rubber mats that can be placed under the base. These offer good grip and prevent slipping but are only partly effective if the supporting surface is too soft or uneven.
