Good morning everyone,
I have a Billy bookshelf from Ikea in my apartment, and I’ve noticed that the doors, especially when moved frequently, tend to be quite noisy and sometimes a bit stiff. I’m very interested to know if anyone has tips or proven methods to make the door movements on the Billy as quiet and smooth as possible.
I’m thinking about possible adjustments to the hinges, lubricants, or other technical tricks. Maybe there are specific replacement parts for the doors that could improve opening and closing.
I would appreciate any helpful advice, especially if it can be done without major modifications. Thanks in advance!

Could you describe exactly where the sticking occurs, whether at the hinge or on the door itself? Thanks for asking! I mainly notice the sticking at the hinges themselves, and when closing, there is often a slight squeaking or creaking sound. The doors are not warped; I have checked that. It sometimes feels like the metal parts inside the hinge are rubbing against each other very slightly.

If the doors do stick, it can also be due to a slight warping of the door. Sometimes tightening the hinge screws or making small adjustments helps.I will try adjusting the screws then.
Does anyone have experience with lubricating the original hinges? Or is the effect usually limited?

Is there any experience with whether the original hinges can be properly lubricated?I doubt that lubricants alone will provide a lasting solution if the hinges were not designed for durability from the start. Such hinges are often intended for inexpensive furniture and tend to show wear over time.
Alternatively, it might be worth considering an investment in high-quality hinges, especially if you value quiet and smooth closing in the medium term.

I agree – sometimes what is offered is not a long-term solution. Marsel60, is this an option for you?

Some users report that these 'soft-close' retrofit kits, which can be attached to standard hinges, generally work well. However, some basic DIY skills are required, as the mounting is not always perfectly suited for Billy units.
If you want to avoid major modifications, it’s best to start with lubricants and adjustments, as this is often sufficient. If not, replacing the hinges is the only option.
