Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of transporting one or more IKEA Billy bookcases safely without causing scratches, dents, or other damage to the wooden panels or edges. Since Billy bookcases are usually delivered as flat-pack items and I want to transport them unpacked, I am especially interested in any practical tips and tricks you have collected to avoid damage during transport.

I mean both transport in a car or van as well as carrying and moving the bookcases inside the house or stairwell.

Who has experience with suitable packing materials or special precautions? How is the handling when transporting the bookcases assembled versus disassembled?

Looking forward to your tips and advice!

Always carry with two people, then there won’t be any silly bumps against the wall 😉

I can only agree with that. Especially with BILLY shelves, handling is tricky due to their size and relatively thin panels.

Additionally, it makes sense to lightly tape all sharp edges with masking tape before carrying; this protects both the shelves and walls or door frames.

I also recommend planning the route through the house carefully before moving, which helps avoid stress and rushed movements that could cause damage.

I know how quickly you can feel uncertain when transporting something like this, especially if you don’t want to disassemble the shelves.

Taking a deep breath and proceeding step by step helps a lot.

It’s also important not to act under time pressure and to get help if you feel unsure. This usually makes the process much more relaxed and helps protect the furniture better at the same time.

I would like to add some further thoughts regarding protection during transport:

The material of BILLY shelves—coated particleboard or MDF—is sensitive to pressure marks and moisture. Therefore, it is important not only to protect them on the outside with blankets or plastic wrap but also to ensure that no moisture can penetrate during transport.

1. Storage before transport:
If the shelves are stored for several hours or days before transport, it is better to keep them dry and always allow slight air circulation.

2. Moisture protection:
Especially in rainy or humid weather, it is advisable to wrap the shelves in waterproof plastic or protective bags.

3. Special protection for the corners:
One method is to protect the corner edges with foam or rubber caps, as commonly used in furniture transportation.

4. During loading:
The shelves should be positioned so that they are not subjected to pressure from other items to avoid deformation.

I am curious how the shelves will ultimately be transported (car, truck, bike trailer?).

That's a good point, especially in hallways and stairwells.

If you have foam covers, you should definitely use them; they have already prevented more serious damage for me.
