Hello everyone,

I installed doors on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit to hide the contents a bit. Unfortunately, I have the problem that the doors often stick or catch when I open or close them. The hinges are correctly screwed in, but it feels like they don’t move smoothly or that the door might be warped. Do you have any tips on how to fix this?

I am especially interested in knowing what causes Kallax doors to stick. Are there proven methods for adjusting the hinges or other tricks to solve this issue permanently?

I have already done some online research, but most of the information was very general. I’m hoping for specific experiences or solutions here in the forum, as I can’t just return the shelving unit and urgently need a practical repair. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

first check if the doors fit perfectly within the frame. Then adjust the hinges: usually there are small screws on the hinges that allow you to slightly change the position.

Sometimes, sanding down the door stop a little can also help.

That’s a good starting point, although I wonder whether wood moisture or the ambient temperature might also play a role here. Kallax is made from coated particleboard material. If it warps due to moisture, the doors can get stuck.

It should be noted: only proper installation ensures long-lasting stable function.

@Bepiteo: Have you checked whether the doors themselves are warped or if the issue is actually caused by the frame or hinges? A warped door panel is hardly something you can fix by adjusting the hinges alone.

Hello Bepiteo,

I completely understand how frustrating this can be. I had exactly the same issue with my Kallax doors. What helped me was:

1. Check the hinges carefully for any damage or if the screws are tight. Sometimes screws loosen during transport.
2. Often, the door is too heavy for the hinge used. In that case, attaching a small silicone pad or furniture slider at the bottom can help the door move more smoothly and prevent it from sticking.
3. Adjust the screws on the hinge that control the horizontal and vertical alignment of the door panel.

If none of this helps, it could be due to the doors being slightly warped. Then I would gently sand the areas where the doors rub against the frame.

I hope this helps you a bit, and don’t worry – with a little patience, it usually works out! 🙂

Really a great tip! 🙂

I also used those small felt feet on my Kallax doors; they’re barely visible and prevent the door from rubbing. Especially with moisture, the boards sometimes swell slightly, and that’s when the door gets stuck.

Otherwise, it's worth readjusting the doors from time to time—the hinges are really flexible. You can even adjust them very precisely.

And yes, don’t get frustrated; this is normal with furniture like Kallax. Also, remember not to slam the doors shut too hard, that doesn’t help either 😉

That’s an important point. Actually, the shelf is in a room that sometimes gets quite humid. Until now, I hadn’t considered that the furniture could cause problems because of that.

What’s the best way to do this exactly? I have seen the screws, but I’m a bit afraid of causing damage. Is there a specific order or pattern for turning them?

I would prefer not to sand down the door without being sure that it’s not another or additional issue.

Thanks to all!
