ᐅ How can I build Ikea Metod kitchen units in an ergonomic and functional way?

klasarHello everyone,
I am currently planning the layout of my new kitchen using Ikea Metod kitchen units and want to make it as ergonomic and functional as possible. I have the following questions in mind: How can I determine the optimal height and arrangement of cabinets to avoid back pain while cooking? What is the best way to divide the work surfaces for efficient workflows? Are there proven tips for organizing storage and appliances to keep frequently used items within easy reach?
I am especially interested in a practical approach that takes into account how people of different heights use the kitchen without having to bend or stretch constantly. I look forward to your experiences, recommendations, and maybe some suggestions that I might easily overlook during the planning process.

How do I find the optimal height and arrangement of cabinets to avoid back pain while cooking? This is exactly the point where I often want to disagree. Most people chase the "optimal height" as if there was a perfect measurement for everyone – and that simply does not exist, especially not in a kitchen layout used by multiple people of different heights.
I say: instead of rigidly relying on a single standard size, it’s better to experiment with what works best and focus on flexible solutions. For example, pull-out countertops or height-adjustable modules. To me, ergonomics means adaptability, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Of course, standard heights like about 90cm (35 inches) countertop height are a good starting point, but it shouldn’t be followed dogmatically. The fact that Ikea Metod systems offer hardly any height flexibility is actually a downside for me, which needs to be compensated by clever planning.
What do you think? Isn’t adaptability for different users more important than fixed measurements?

Ergonomics means adaptability to me, not one-size-fits-all.I fully agree with this key statement. From my perspective, there are several clear principles to consider when designing ergonomic and functional Ikea Metod kitchen units:
- Worktop height: A general rule is that the countertop should be approximately at elbow height – for most people between 85 and 95 cm (33 to 37 inches). Ikea’s standard countertop height is already quite close but only suits an average body height.
- Arrangement of work zones: Areas for preparation, cooking, and cleaning should be logically distributed along the kitchen unit to avoid unnecessary walking distances.
- Storage space: Accessories such as full-extension drawers and internal organizers significantly improve accessibility.
- Appliance placement: The stove, sink, and refrigerator should follow the so-called kitchen work triangle, which reduces unnecessary movement.
Regarding adaptability, Ikea Metod offers a range of base cabinet heights, for example 80, 88, and 92 cm (31.5, 34.6, and 36.2 inches) plus the countertop thickness. This allows some flexibility in determining the final worktop height. It is worthwhile to plan according to these measurements and take personal height into account.
In summary, I recommend measuring your body directly before purchasing and selecting modules accordingly. Additionally, investing in internal fittings can ease your workflow.
Good morning,
I would like to provide a brief introduction on how to approach planning an Ikea Metod kitchen layout ergonomically – based on personal experience and common mistakes.
1. Measure and analyze: Determine your body measurements and define your optimal working height (elbow height minus about 5 cm (2 inches)). Also measure the height of your countertop if you plan to extend or use an existing one.
2. Choosing the height with Metod: Ikea mainly offers cabinet frame heights of 80 cm (31.5 inches), 88 cm (34.6 inches), and 92 cm (36.2 inches) for base units. Add the countertop thickness (usually 2–4 cm (1–1.5 inches)). This way, you can easily achieve countertop heights around 90–96 cm (35.4–37.8 inches).
3. Organize workflow:
- Position preparation areas (e.g., cutting board, waste bin) preferably on the left edge or next to the sink.
- Place the sink in the center, creating a central cleaning station.
- The stove or cooktop should be on the right to minimize the distance between preparation and cooking.
4. Optimize storage space:
- Pull-out drawers and accessories (baking tray racks, cutlery inserts) help keep things organized.
- Frequently used items should be stored in upper cabinets or on sliding fronts for quick access.
5. Avoid mistakes:
- Avoid narrow spaces between countertop and stove (at least 60 cm (24 inches) of workspace in front of the stove).
- Do not choose countertop height too low (to prevent back issues).
- Plan movement within the kitchen sparingly (work triangle concept).
Finally, a tip: If possible, visit an Ikea store with showroom kitchens and test your preferred heights virtually or in person using a tape measure, to get a feel for them.
I hope this helps as a starting point for your planning!

Short and pragmatic:
- Set the countertop at elbow height.
- Arrange the sink, stove, and refrigerator in a triangle.
- Organize storage according to frequency of use.
- Choose full extension drawers instead of simple doors.
This is usually sufficient for functional ergonomics with Metod.

4. Make optimal use of storage space:
- Internal drawers and accessories (baking sheet holders, cutlery inserts) help keep things organized.I can only agree with that. Additionally, I would like to point out that besides the height of the countertop, not only the placement of appliances but also the range of movement is crucial for ergonomics. A Metod kitchen setup can be enhanced with the right depth and a well-thought-out design concept using upper cabinets or open shelving units, so that kitchen tools are within comfortable reach.
Clear organizational concepts with labeled boxes or drawer organizers also significantly support functional work. Especially with Ikea kitchens, the system offers many options to accommodate individual needs, provided these aspects are considered in the planning from the beginning.
